If Gary North reads this forum, then....

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Obviously, for some reason or another, Gary North has become somewhat jaded with y2k. Could it be that he is fed up with a job that pays nothing and no longer serves a purpose (if the purpose was to convince the convinceable, he has CERTAINLY accomplished this many times over!). Well, Gary...if you are reading this, let me say on behalf of many, THANK YOU!!!!! If you never post another link, you have already accomplished your goal. You'll never know the thousands of people that will face y2k prepared because of your site.

I heard Gary on the radio almost two years ago and thought he didn't know what he was talking about. Then I went home, got on my computer and started studying. I have read everything I can get my hands on since that time. I am convinced that Gary was and is still right in his overall assessment. I feel he saved the lives of me and my family members. I shall always be indebted to him for all he has done for us. BTY, we are prepared. We have been learning to turn out wonderful meals on our restored wood cookstove.

Thanks Gary - You Da Man!

In 1997 I received Gary's Y2K newsletter advertisement. I became and instant GI. I then converted all my retirement savings into Morgan silver dollars. They increased in price over 50%. THANKS GARY!

I like Jim Lord's protrayal of Gary North. To paraphrase,

Gary North is like a lighthouse, shining his light of information all over the place. He shows rocks, sand bars and other dangerous places. There are REAL dangers out there. Gary's problem is that he assumes nothing is being done or can be done.

We can turn the boat aside, close all the water tight doors, slow the boat down, hold life boat drills, put on life jackets, etc.

The only question is have we done enough. During WW II one small destroyer was hit by 5 Kamikazee planes and still surivived. I think that is what is going to happen to us. People will be killed and systems destroyed but we will still limp into the future.

Even if America was blasted back to 1931, we would still be in better shape than 25% of the people on earth today.

"You da man!" Second that.

Most deserving of a President's Medal or whatever it's called; and least likely to be nominated for it. (Also least likely to accept.)

Objectively measured, if 'twere possible, Y2k has been "remediated" some amount of "points" on 1 to 10 scale because of warnings and PRESSURE TO REMEDIATE exerted by those such as Gary, and he foremost among them.

I wonder exactly how many points of improvement could be accurately credited to Gary North individually, if such measurement were possible. We have no alternative history that took place in his absence, but I'd venture something greater than a half point, though would I go as far as one, I don't know. Maybe we could (flame away) indulge in such angel-counting after January, for those inclined...

Gratitude for such unselfish giving is appropriate. Thank you.

From what I've read about his overall mindset, Gary North probably is a loony in real life. However, he has played more or less fair with his Y2K postings. His commentary is sarcastic and sometimes not very consistent, but his sources are the same press articles we all use. And his edits of them seem straightforward.

On the other hand, what he's doing is pretty easy. You can go to De Jager's press review site (http://www.year2000.co m/y2karticles.html) and get virtually the same set of articles North uses.

And it's not like it takes a very deep analysis of Y2K to know we're in for trouble. You can boil all of North's observations down to a few points -- supply chain, pervasive embedded systems, just in time, fractional reserve banking, international monetary flows. Oh, and "Americans are sinful, weak and foolish and going to hell."

Dr. North:

(...incase this thread caught you eye.)

Thanks for breakin' it down for this non-techie! I've especially enjoyed your humor. Thanks for the noble sacrifices you (and especially your family!!) have made in your effort to teach us how to perform a critical analysis of the articles. You and I didn't always agree, but I think your intention was to challenge us to form our own opinions rather than swallowing the PR hook, line and sinker. You certainly have suceeded, and I tip my hat to you sir!

While I think your distaste for the ills of our modern society intrudes on your ability to treat these issues in an unbiased manner, I too must thank you for your work in posting.

There IS no better source for information and documentation of this problem on the WEB.

You are to be commended for a thankless, and I would guess at this point, somewhat dangerous endeavor.

Thanks Gary.

I've read Dr North's newsletter for years. I got it the second I read his late 1996 issue. He has not been right about everything, but he has a sound if not perfect world outlook and espouses many if not all principals which I also hold. The man is a long-term THINKER, who tries to reconcile global problems, eternal principles, and our investments. He has risked his professional reputation on this prediction, and I bet he hopes he is more wrong than right. If he's right...he won't be selling newsletters for years to come; if he's worng, how many resubsriptions do you think he'll get? All in all, thnaks, Dr North (and I'm really sorry if calling you St. Gray hurts your feelings!)

I'll owe GN my life if y2k is very bad. I somehow found his site just over a year ago and became a GI within about 2 days. If it hadn't been for him, I'd still be depending on the newspapers for y2k "news". Thanks Gary.

Ditto's for gratitude for GN. I sent this to GN just in case he didnt read the original.

You may have saved millions due to your efforts of spreading the word to prepare for what may come. My child and I would not have known except for the your efforts and the Rogue Valley web site, which enlighened me to start my preps.

Thank you for being the voice calling in the desert to millions. May God reward you for the efforts you have put forth to help us, even in the face of the bombardment of all stinging arrows shot your way.

Dr. North. God bless you and yours!! Thankyou from my Family and several others!

Cheers and Happy New years!!!

Thanks Gary -- Very best wishes to you and yours!!

Dear Dr. North: Thank you for opening my eyes. I was an instant GI, as was my wonderful husband. The minute he read the first article from your site that I printed up for him (he calls me his "infobabe,") he went right out and bought a generator. Since then, we have both been making serious preparations, and we owe whatever we are able to accomplish in this regard to you. Paul Revere, take a bow!

I saw Gary North and Brother Ed Yourdon on tv one day just by accident! My life has never been the same since. These two men will always be known as heros to us, no matter which way it goes:)

I've had the impulse to email Gary many times to thank him, but didn't want to intrude on his time. Perpaps there will be other opportunities to honor this heroic man, but maybe this will be my only chance. Dr. North, I am politically a leftwinger, but you have my respect and admiration. You have stood up for what is right and handled with dignity (usually) the abuse you have attracted. Well done, soldier.

I hope there are others, such as myself, who have prepared IN SPITE of the ridiculous paranoia spewed out by Gary North. Sorry, Gary, but it's true. Where are you? Got a better scam somewher else?

Dear Gary North,

You've been a beacon of information, my most visited bookmark, and a source of humor as well as anger against government incompetence.

I'm one of the liberal, media types who Got It right away after visiting your site. I've pounded the table at my job to get my colleagues and bosses to take Y2K seriously. I've grilled politicians and PR flaks. Believe me, it hasn't been easy to be thought a nutcase. But then, you know much more about sticking your neck w-a-y w-a-y out to sound the alarm.

I respect you and am in awe at your courageous effort.

Even if you are completely wrong, your legacy of running one of the most comprehensive Y2K information/warning sites will go on. People will KNOW the emperor has no clothes ... even if my friends in the media tell them he's wearing the best Armani available.

And if you are completely right .... God help us all. But some of us will be able to survive and rebuild our communities because you were the canary in the coal mine for the world.

When you pass over to the other side, Gary, you should look forward to your life review. Right now you don't know how many people you help. One day you'll see that it's been hundreds of thousands.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you Dr. North, found your site, got it and now prepared as best as possible for 7 little ones and their parents. You have been a friend through all these months and kept us from buying into the spin. Thanks Again! Nana

Dear Dr.Gary North:

I am from India, one of those *sleeping* countries as far as Y2K preparations are concerned. Prior to mid-1998, I had heard several predictions from Hindu spiritual saints and sages that a major civilizational change would come all over the world after 2000. Being a spiritual/religious person myself and disillusioned with modern civilization, I was very much expecting such a change. In mid-98, I accidentally bumped into your site. Since then, I visited your site almost everyday. I and my family owe a lot to you. I think our family is now spiritually, emotionally, financially and physically prepared for a severe shutdown of modern civilization and hoping and praying for the dawn of a new spiritual civilization. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You have saved millions. May Krishna (who we believe is Christ) bless you. May He, the Supreme Spirit, protect us all.

Your brother in God,

Parthasarathy Srinivasan Software Consultant Chennai India

Thanks Gary

As you don't have a feedback facility at your web site I'll take advantage of this thread to convey my sincere thanks on all your valuable work re Y2K awareness.

Although you do not have a technology background you have done your best to become informed. Some of your observations may not have been quite correct but overall your remarks have been right on target.

Nobody can know happen next year but you have given us realistic reasons why we cannot be complacent about Y2K and you may have saved many lives with your efforts.

The best outcome for all of this is for you and I to end up with egg all over our faces! But that would be due to extremely good luck rather than the good management of this whole Y2K debacle.

Thanks again.
