How come stores want less than 20 dollars????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Every other place I go to seems to have a sign either no $50 or $100 or only accepts $20?

BUT THE BANKS KEEP TRYING TO GIVE ME $50 AND $100. There was a time when this would be considered A CLUE.

What about the smaller stuff?

For a smaller bill they give you a tray that was actually wiped off.

It could be that lots of folks are buying small items and trading in all those $50's & $100's for small bills (stash cash?), and the stores may have limited small bills over the holiday.

I've noticed the same thing lately at convience stores during gas fill ups; no 50's or 100's accepted! I asked the cashier why and was told that too many people were bringing in $100 bills and not enough small bills on hand to cash them all. This has happened to me several years before when I learned my lesson. Every time I go to the bank to cash my payroll check, the teller tries to give me 100's which I politely turn down and request 20's instead. While better than nothing, the $100 bill is now the old maid that you don't want to get stuck with! At the end of this bank run already in progress, those who are last to get their cash will be stuck with the old maid. Those who are last in line get nothing!

Well, I have seen no signs of small bill shortages. Last two days I have traded in some $50's and $20's for $1's at Albertsons. No problem.

I too always ask for 5s, tens or twentys. And every time I go to the supermkt, I take hundred dollar bill. That way I get them broken down. My thing now is to write checks for everything I can to keep my checking acc't down, cash Chubby Hubby's pay checks and never use less than a $50 bill to buy anything requiring cash. Taz

Squid,

What bank are you going to? I'm using the main Bank One ATM downtown and am still able to get 20's with no problem...

I'll try a withdrawal up north here next payday and let you know what I find out. Could be that the "lurking GI's" are finally making themselves noticed.

Deb: I didn't say that there were not $20's but that for years every time I asked for mulla from credit union (use two) they always defaulted to $20's as the large bill unless you asked otherwise. Now they default to $50's and $100's. Big picture there will be small steps by all the financial institutions to try to keep the herd from being spooked. The signs for $20's or less are showing up at places that I have not seen before.

By the way the bad news is that Bankone has gotten hit before with major derivatives trading losses, the good news now they might be to big to fail.

Best of luck to you all.

1) the typical store drawer starts out with a TOTAL CASH VALUE of 50 or 100 dollars. It's called the "drawer" or "bank".

2) The management tries to KEEP the drawer at 100 for as much of the day as possible to minimize theft losses. 3 people walk in with 50 bills and want to buy 4.95 worth of stuff and you can't sell to the third person (do the math)

I managed stores and shops for years.

chuck

BTW MY bank was out of 100's and the folks had to WORK to come up with 8 fifties on Friday.
