Can a dog sniff out GOLD a base metal?

Is it possible for a dog to sniff out gold. Dogs find shoes, drugs, bombs and everything else. Can you imagine walking in the gold country and your lab pulls out a 3 oz nugget. Might be. Has anyone ever tried?

Gold does not have an odor. Oh wait, I have a mutt that I want to sell you. He does nothing but dig up buried treasure. It really makes me mad.

I'll see if my pitbull can sniff out a krugerrand in someone's pocket. She might earn her keep next year!

some years ago i tried this with a puppy, golden retriever, really. used the tactic of first letting the dog eat only prior to sniffing a gold coin. next, assosiated food with first finding the coin. it did work....inside the home. outside, the dog revealed irratic results when commanded to find coin under the earth. incidently, i endeavored to remove my scent from coin. my experiment seemed inconclusive and i spent no more time on it. it may have some merit. I have read that prospectors have made this work in finding ore.
