Chernobyl reactor starts up again

"The only operational reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine has been reopened after undergoing extensive repairs."

"The reactor has been shut down for months, partly due to a lack of funding, and is working for the moment at only a fraction of its capacity."

"Two other reactors are permanently out, and the fourth is encased in a steel-and-concrete sarcophagus, following the catastrophic meltdown thirteen years ago which spread a radioactive cloud over a large area of Europe."

"The Ukrainian government says it is still waiting for a large amount of financial assistance from the West before it agrees to close down the Chernobyl plant altogether."

When you are working next door to a blob of concrete and steel that is leaching radioactive isotopes into the groundwater, why would you care about remediation. Note that the reactor has been shutdown for months, the accident was years ago. They have been operating this reactor because of absolute necessity during the winter.

Ukraine is nuked toast.
