The state currently provides many of the same services available at the same or cheaper cost offered in the private sector. From laundry services to catering, the state is competing with private entities for business. Why does this happen? Because Washington state is prohibited by law from contracting with the private sector for many, many services -- even if it would bring the same quality of service at a much lower cost. In effect, the government has a monopoly on these services:
