'Fess Up. Did Y2k Come Up During Thanksgiving Dinner Conversations? If so, What did You Say? What did They Say?

Was Y2k discussed at all during your Thanksgiving dinner gathering? If so, what did you say? What did THEY say?

My wife was under strict orders: don't talk about it. I didn't. She didn't. So, of course nobody else did.

I warned them all a year ago. They laughed and did nothing.

Happy Holidays!

Nope, and I was a bit surprised, as half of my family are GI the other half DGI, but I was glad, some times the arguring sounds like that on this forum. Can get really heated.....

I promised every-one at my inlaws house, 2 weeks ago that as long as no-one ask me Y2K questions, I would keep my mouth shut. They asked, I answered, some got sick, most went home...---...

The only mention of Y2K was before dinner when my 17 year old nephew who has not been up to Grandma's house (nor my house 8 miles away) in 10 years, said, " Uncle Billy said that with your cow and chickens and all, you are getting Y2K competent". I replied, "no, I just love having animals." None of the other 20 some people brought it up.

I knew better than to bring it up @ my moms. I have gotten here to prep for a minimal time (end of discussion)

The subject did come up during dinner @ the in-laws house. I threw out a couple of the tastier bits of information:

Why would we spend Billions if it were a non-issue?

Why would the Airlines ground flights if it were a non-issue?

Why would the Oil Companies be shutting down the Pipelines .....?

Why would we spend Millions on Y2k Command Centers..........?

Why would Fema/RedCross issue preparation infor..............?

Yadayadayadayada

I sent them links to the Senate 100 Day Report and told them to make their own decisions.

I did not discuss my preps with anyone!

I warned the entire family in the spring of 1998 and again last Christmas. Very few are preparing, only the one oldest individual, who lives alone. If they want my advice, they can ask. They certainly know that I've spent the last 2 years educating myself on this issue and I'm in a position to be trusted. No, the topic did not come up at Thanksgiving and I did not force it on anyone. Hopefully, we will be able to take care of them if necessary.

I discovered by chance that three of our neighbors are prepping, altho I don't know to what extent. I've noticed piles of firewood springing up here & there. It makes me hopeful that much more is going on, quietly. Please God....

Some discussions. My brother-in-law is a VP at electric utility company. He said they (Allegheny Power) would be ok but thought smaller coop's were in trouble. Didn't seem to bother him in the least. As a programmer with twenty years of bad code, I believe at the very least, y2k will be VERY disruptive to economy. In the middle of last minute remediation at a group of small manufacturing companies throughout the USA. Owners are totally clueless.

My 81 year old mother had been a DGI til 6 mos. ago asked about our preps and told us stuff she had heard on Art Bell.

Will wonders never cease? We're a small family but we're all GI. Nobody's complaining about the time we spend on preps. The teens are pitching in ... the seniors have made some financial contributions.

We'll get thru it somehow ...

One of my daughter's friends brought it up and I basically just listened. His girlfriend rolled her eyes and left the scene. I told him to have some water and Cup-a-noddle soup on hand, that's about all he has time to do. I told him it was too late to do much of anything to prepare. He looked sick when he left.

We brought it up again to my sister in law.

The result...she might get some more fire wood, and she rolled her eyes when we said we're giving her a water barrel for Christmas.

Bok and I are very worried, both of our nieces are back home with her, one with a young child.

However we're already taking care of Mom...we can't provide for the whole family.

Interesting you ask this as I was going to start a similar thread. We had a small gathering with our neighbors (who thankfully GI) and an interesting topic came up. It is a "friend of a friend" type thing and I was wondering if anyone who frequents this forum could confirm or deny this.

One of our neighbors has a relative on the East Coast who is high up in the food transport business (supply chain type of stuff) who told our neighbor that they received a government mandate to have food and water stored at each nursing facility in the country to supply each resident for 10 days. Obviously causing much difficulty in getting this done and stored before the end of December. The neighbor didn't know which gov agency made the mandate--SSI, HCFA, etc.

Has anyone else heard this or seen evidence of stocking up at local nursing homes?

yeah, this subject came up on turkey day this year and last xmas and like a lead balloon... it seems all of a sudden everyone is a computer expert in my family when before ( y2k realizations ) they were only common laborers! anyways, of course everyone "rolled their eyes" at when i was only scraping the surface. i at least tried to make it clear that i didn't have a huge stash so maybe they won't come runnin! but more seriously, my older sis has 4 little girls and she is of course, not prepared so i really feel my dad and i are soaking the burden of getting xtra preps... come to think of it though, dad is a bit of a pollyanna and i've been secretly buying preps when he gives me the checkbook for the weekly grocery store trip. we'll just see.

We mentioned it to my inlaws last Thanksgiving and my F. in law excused himself and went home. We waited and spoke again last week. He was receptive this time...but what he does is anyones guess. Because he is family, we'll have to take him in. Really not fair though...the man is a millionaire that is likely to lose it all. He could spend a grand and help us out but probably wont.
