What am I supposed to pay for my tabs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

Please forgive the simplicity of this question but this is the first time I have been to the forum.

This concerns mine and my wife's car tabs.

My wifes Tabs are due 12/15/99 Mine are due 1/4/2000

What should I expect for the ammounts that I will be asked to pay?

I am hoping $30 on both. We got creamed last year.

Assuming the court lets 695 stand, your car due in 2000 should be $30 for MVET, plus any other fees. Check you last bill for what other fees apply in your area.

For your wife's car, it depend if she can park it for 2 weeks, or buy a few of the 3 day trip permits. If you pay in December it will be the old renewal price. I understand if you delay until January, it should be the same deal as your car.

Sell your wife's car by December 15 and buy her a new SUV January 1. She'll love you for it and you'll only pay $30 for the new SUV tabs. What a bargain.

FYI: Even though tabs expire on 12-15-99, the cops will probably not pull you over to check expiration date. You're probably safe until 12- 31-99 as long as you have no other moving violations. If you do get pulled over for something, you're screwed and will have to pay the $71 ticket for driving with expired tabs as well..... I say sell it or park it for 2 weeks.

My tabs expire 11/29/99. I suppose I could by the first few days of December. The cops in my area have been pretty decent about this kind of thing up to now atleast. Then, could I get by with a few 3-day tabs? Followed by X-mas holidays and eventually paying $30 in Jan/2000? Does this make sense? If I pay now I'll have to cough up $450. At that rate, i could afford about 6 tickets @$71 each!?

I remember once I had a pickup put in the shop to fix the transmission. Unfortunately I choose a poor mechanic. I lived in Tacoma, and worked in Kent. I used public transportation (buses) for a few weeks, (getting on at 5 am to arrive at work at 8:30) and finally wound up buying an old Vespa for $75. It sounds like for the money you will save either option will work. I'm not at all suggesting you break the law, but it also sounds like you would be money ahead if you paid the fine when and if you got caught. My brother was in a similar predicament when his family was transferred to the mid west, and he only needed his car licensed for three months, and did not want pay for the tabs for the 3/4 of a year he was not in the state.
