* 35 MORE DAYS OF STAN FARYNA : TIME TO CHILL OUT DUDE!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I dont know about the rest of you but Stan is REALLY overdoing the posts. First he posts at least once a day with his 14 DAYS thing. Next he posts several of his specific items for sale. Finally he tries to post his "stuff for sale" with almost every new post made here as a reply.

Its bad enough we see regular ads all over the web, but Stan has really gotten to be an annoyance with the non-stop ads on this forum.

PLEASE SLOW IT DOWN STAN !

Answers

So Hamster...just because they are posted do you have to read every one of them?? I think Stan is doing a great service for the newbies, especially when it would be easy to stumble onto the forum and in one reading get scared away. Stan gives them useful information and tools with which to get started. We old timers have 'been there and done that' and we want to hear only the latest coming down the pike. But newbies don't even know what most of us are talking about half of the time. (I am not sure WE know what we are talking about most of the time!!!) Give them a break...no better yet...give them a leg up and don't bug Stan for all the work he has done.

Second, or maybe rename this place Faryna's Forum.

dave

-- dave (wootendave@hotmail.com), November 26, 1999.

Taz, Stan is getting out of control. Its almost every message now. One of todays messages he posted something like "Thanks for the link" and then the whole stream of ad crap under it.

Stan would help with ONE of his 14 DAYS things each day, maybe a couple of the CO-OP things, but this posting in almost every message is not altruistic, its flat out marketing.

-- hamster (hamster@mycage.com), November 26, 1999.

Stan is working hard to help people get preps together. It doesn't bother me that he posts the 14 days thing over and over. We all know he does it. It isn't any kind of personal attack, and it will help the newbies.

I don't see why repitition should bother someone whose idea of an exciting trip is running in a little wheel all day. :-)

If Stan's "out of control" posting of how to get started convinces JUST ONE family to prepare that otherwise might not have, IT IS WORTH IT.

hamster, you have to realize that many might come here out of completely befuddled curiosity about Y2K, and breeze through the index of thread titles. They may never return if they don't get a "hit" on what they should do for Y2K. Stan's 14 DAYS OF PREPARATIONS ensure that they will.

Surely, hamster, you can put up with Stan's prep threads for another month?

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), November 26, 1999.

<>

LOL.

hamster, Stan really just does this to help people. He doesn't make any money from this. He's simply a decent guy!!! There will be a lot of disoriented people dropping by this month and I'm glad Stan is here to point the way.

-- Mara (MaraWayne@aol.com), November 26, 1999.

Solution? Don't look at his posts......

Problem solved.

The man is only trying to help. We need people to prepare, be it a few more. Save your indignation for the deserving politicians, trolls, PR morons and the like.

-- PJC (paulchri@msn.com), November 26, 1999.

I suspect Stan's posts have increased lately due to it being a holiday week and new people, prompted perhaps by the Y2K movie, having time to search the web for info. Please keep posting your info, Stan, it's invaluable for newbies, saving them their most precious commodity--TIME.

-- Old (timer@helping.out), November 26, 1999.

I had once asked that Stan start posting his "14 day preps" each day. The reason is so that new GIs have an idea what to do with such an incredibly short time remaining. I think someone else is also doing this once a day.

So back off hamster. Just because YOUR ready, don't jeopardize the chances of the newbies who may only see Stan's note, and see it once, but it gives them an idea what to do.

-- 4 (4@4.4), November 26, 1999.

I appreciate the defense team. (smile) Now, I am going to the blackboard to write one hundred times: "I will not post links in every other thread."

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

-- Stan Faryna (faryna@groupmail.com), November 26, 1999.

I love the fact that so many people who never post anything are suddenly posting in only a few minutes to support Stan. So many unknown names.

I dont hate him, I just dont think it should be his advertising medium.

-- hamster (hamster@mycage.com), November 26, 1999.

I'm with you hamster. I'm tired of seeing that commercial over and over and over and over and over... ad nauseum. Yes, I can flick over it and over it and over it and over it, for Christ sake. I've only been lurking on this board for week, ten days and I've seen it countless times. Hire a damn Goodyear blimp.

-- Guy Daley (guydaley@bwn.net), November 26, 1999.

Hey, Rodent --

Guess what?

As new posts roll in at the top, old threads roll off at the bottom.

Guess what else?

Newbies coming to a forum, especially this late in the game, are apt to be in something of a panic, desperate for information, and *not* likely to delve into the archived category links at the bottom.

And guess what *else*?

Stan's posts [drumroll] re-appear once they've rolled off into virtual oblivion.

It would be nice if the BBS software supported a non-scrolling region at the top of the list, so the sysops could put important bulletins there.

But, it doesn't.

Deal with it.

And if you really *can't* deal with topical information being posted in a manner that allows it to be found by those coming here to find it, and information like it, perhaps you shouldn't give yourself apoplexy by coming here in the first place.

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), November 26, 1999.

Sorry, Hamster, but I think his 14 days messages should continue. Even at this late date, there are new people here for the first time. If it offends you, don't click on the link.

-- Nancy (wellsnl@hotmail.com), November 27, 1999.

Ever find your mailbox filling up with junk? Do you wonder why spammers just keep doing it? Here is the answer -- it works. Some people actually LIKE spam.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), November 27, 1999.

Flint, I would ask you if you where comparing what Stan does to spaming, but I really don't care.

Stan is one heck of a nice fellow, he has put in alot of personal time and effort to make these supplies available for all; those of you who don't know him, should consider it your loss.

-- Lilly (homesteader145@yahoo.com), November 27, 1999.

The truth is, it's NOT too late to prepare, at least for a small household. So Stan is doing a MAJOR service in pointing people in the right direction.

The more of my neighbors are prepared for hard times, the better my chance is of surviving this mess.

Thanks, Stan. And good luck/God's blessings on you.

-- get (the@word.out), November 27, 1999.

Lilly, I second that. Stan is one of the nicest guys I've met. He truly is caring and it is NOT too late to buy many preps for newbies. What he is doing is self-less and probably going to save a lot of people from going hungry. CONTINUE on Stan! And Thank you for all you do!

-- Debi (LongTimeLurker@shy.com), November 27, 1999.

Has Flint ever contributed any practical advice to this board? Perhaps if he didn't spend so much time diagramming arguments, he might have made practical suggestions and Stan wouldn't have to post so much. See? It's FLINT's fault!

-- Why Not Do (Something@Useful.Guy), November 27, 1999.

Go Stan -maybe somebody needs it!

I second the opinion of Flint. I was new here in September, and your right, Flint doesn't add much to help people prepare. I told him to SHUT UP back then.

But, you know, (paraphrased) "since we can't PROVE things are broken now, that means they won't break in the future."

Not really in the spirit of this Forum.

-- Gregg (g.abbott@starting-point.com), November 27, 1999.

hamster:

My name is NOT new here.

I've chatted extensively with Stan off the forum. He isn't "advertising" a for profit business. He is trying to help people prepare as easily and as cheaply as possible.

Now, I'm NOT going to criticize you, but I've noticed more regulars, on the forum, asking Stan to continue than suggesting he stop.

And he isn't being trollish. He is not obstructing the purposes of the forum.

We are all getting a bit edgy. Heck, it is almost 3:00 AM here in Michigan and I'm responding to a hamster. {BG}

Seriously, I truly believe Stan is trying to help.

good luck to you

-- mushroom (mushroom_bs_too_long@yahoo.com), November 27, 1999.

Hamster,

I think maybe you have forgotten what the panic felt like when you first became aware of y2k. And please do not forget you had a lot more time to get ready then anyone starting out now. Can you honestly say it would be easy to scroll through what we read on the forum today, if you were just starting out? Lots of news, lots of opionions, but other than Stan's message not much in the way of prep information anymore. I see the messages and skip them. My scroll bar works real well while in a thread. I bet yours does too.

Keep up the good work Stan.

-- Dian (bdp@accessunited.com), November 27, 1999.

Stan: Forget this bad attitude dude. Not only has Stan earned our respect, Stan has earned a stone wall. Hamster, I'll will stonewall your efforts to undermine Stan's plan. Stan has made so so so many contributions to this forum. Go eat some chocolate dude and learn to sift through the bitter-sweet. Another cheer for Stan...thank you Sir.

-- Feller (feller@wanna.help), November 27, 1999.

Stan please keep posting. A couple of weeks ago a GI friend of mine called and asked me to e-mail her a list of preps so she could give it to some people at work who just GI'd. I sent them your lists. And BTW this was b4 you started posting them every day so it wasn't easy to find. So because of your postings a family with 2 small children is getting prepped with a useable easy to manage list in hand. My hat is off to you. Keep it up.

-- Stacia (ClassyCwgl@aol.com), November 27, 1999.

OKAYYYY, already. He's a good guy and doing a great thing for the newbies. Im sure he loves the accolades but after awhile it kinda gets sickening to some of us. Stan keep it up...nuff said, now on to more important items.

-- Rod (rspain@webcombo.net), November 27, 1999.

Go Stan.

-- (Ladylogic46@aol.com), November 27, 1999.

When I first posted here last summer, I asked for advice on a specific situation. Stan answered the post and then sent me an email offering personal help. I declined because we don't live near each other but I was gratified; it was an authentic offer, he wasn't trying to sell me anything. I thanked him then and I thank him again. At that time, he lived in a large metro area. Stan, I hope you can get out of there if it becomes necessary.

We all sell something to make our way. In the immortal words of Donna Summer "I work hard for my money". If Stan makes a nickel off his prep links, I say he has earned it. Thanks Stan.

Right. And some people even like trolls. And *some* people probably even like "Ladylogic46". Which reminds me -- aren't you the one who decided to stalk Infomagic? Whatcha gonna do if he sics the FBI on ya?

Thanks again to all my friends here for the kind words. I will be revising the 14 Days of Preps soon to reflect the short time and, perhaps, limited resources which people may face should they decide to prepare. While there is not much time left, some people will be able to make preparations-- even if it is only for a rough 14 days. As for the cooperative preps, they are fast coming to a conclusion as we are running out of time to place orders, receive goods, repack, and sip them off.

In the past, debunkers criticized (in the most unkindest spirit) the fact that the books linked in 14 Days of Preps were associated with an Amazon account. I repeat what I said then too such crticism: the commissions earned from those links and links elsewhere on the web associated with that account go to a shelter for abused women. At the time, I provided the name and address of the CPA firm that would verify such to written requests, but as far as I have heard no such requests were received.

As far as the cooperative preps go, I have received no commission in cash or goods. I have made no money or charged any money for my time spent organizing the cooperative preps, repacking goods, and shipping them out. In all of the cooperative prep deals that have been conducted, I was contacted first by those with an interest in things and I, then, contacted a dealer who could offer such goods at a good price. In many cases, the prices of goods were significantly less than retail prices.

I have never insisted on this forum that the goods offered through the cooperative preps were absolutely essential for Y2K preparations.

I would like to thank all the dealers that I have worked with for their compassion and willingness to sacrifice profits on the cooperative preps orders that they have received. With their permission, I can name two of them: James Keyser of Keyser International and Mark Miclette of www.watertanks.com. Thank you Mssrs. Keyser and Miclette for being apart of the cooperative preps; thank you for helping people on the TB2000 discussion forum get the preps that they wanted to get.

Sincerely,
Stan Faryna

Stan's a hero. You go Stan!

-- Sally Strackbein (sally@y2kkitchen.com), November 27, 1999.

Um, the "About" section again, like, man, this Forum is ABOUT preparing for, um, duh, dis Y2K thing, and, like, why diss Stan who fulfills the purpose on the Forum, um, hey, you gotta problem with On Topic?

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), November 27, 1999.

Flint's just jealous cause he bought all his crap before Stan organized all the money saving deals :)

-- a (a@a.a), November 28, 1999.

Hi Hamster,

On the 28th Nov you said in another thread... Someone please come up with a daily "Getting to know TB2000" sort of post. These "What does XXX mean" are coming in daily and there are alot of things we no longer refer to in detail because of familiarity. I mean if I say "NWC" almost all the old timers know its the Naval War College, but newbies wont "GET IT"....

Isn't this just what Stan is doing, in a way, except he's getting straight to the Prep angle?

Stan, maybe you could add the GI=GET IT stuff to your daily 14 day tips post and kill 2 birds with one stone. (Plus keep Hamster happy!)

I don't find Stan's posts at all annoying, they are consistently titled and thus easy to skip, but they may well be useful to somebody. RonD
