As we go down to the wire, many people are stressing out. I have a cure. Curl up with a good book.

The following books are biographies mostly written over 50 BT (50 years Before Technolgy). These people have BTDT. You should be able to get these in your library or any Large used book store.

"We took to the Woods" Louise D. Rich Lady school teacher marries woodsman in 1930's Main. Good quote, "No we are not escapists. We simply changed one set of problems for another. For example, instead of worrying about our son being hit by a car, we worry about him getting lost in the woods."

"The Martins of Gunbarrel" Mildred A Martin 1920's summer waitress at Yellowstone Park meets and marries a horse wrangler from one of the local dude ranches. Latter they wind up running their own dude ranch.

"Stump Ranch Pioneer" Melle Davis 1930's Idaho. A family wiped out by the Dust Bowl and Depression in Colorado migrates to Idaho. Good Quote, seen on another car headed north, "Idaho we're busted flat, here we come in spite of that, not expecting wealth or gain, just want our kids to see it rain."

"The Cheechakoes" Wayne Short Late 1940's, Family moves to the islands of South Alaska. Lives off the land and commercial fishing. When this book was written, 1962, their town had 16 people, all Shorts including Waynes 3 sons. His wife home schools the boys and they get to town once a year.

"Crusoe of Lonesome Lake" Leland Stowe 1913 Ralph Edwards starts a homestead in the frozen wilds of Atnarko valley British Columbia, Canada. He was 40 miles from nowhere and had to pack the last portion of the trail in on his back. He eventually marries and raises a family and starts flying (at 62)as well as farming and ranching.

"Four in a Wild Place" John Stallard 1960's Wisconsin. Top Reporter turns back clock. Sells Car, rents out house, takes wife and two kids 3/5 and goes back to land. "This is the story of the Stallards' year long expeiment in homesteading. The author repors their mistakes as well as their successes, and in so doing explodes some myths about "the good old days"

Relax and good reading everybody. You will get many good tips from these books.

If you want to know what its like to live off the grid and the JIT system, read "GoodBye Boise, Hello Alaska" by Cora Holmes. Its not an old book and still available. A really good read.

Books are my passion. When I was growing up the only books I had were from the school library. In the summer, I had no access to books. Every year my children get a classic book from me if they get nothing else. My home is filled with books, all kinds. Books are one of the most important preps you can have for y2k.
