Even though I have been here for some time and asked many questions I need help this time.... I have a 6.5 Onan lp gas gen. with a small problem. Wiring from the lp gas solenoid has a black wire from it,I also have a white wire from under the start/stop switch,which is not connected to anything. My question is , are these two supposed to be connected ,to activate the lp gas solenoid so it lets gas go to the carb??? Does anyone happen to have a wiring diagram to confirm connections??? I have someone getting drawings from Onan but it will take some time for him to get back to me... Any help will be appreciated, I'll save all my leftovers for you as payment....:)

Connecting a black to a white wire sounds unusual to me, Furie. They usually represent different legs of the circuit. You may be able to have Onan send you the wiring diagram via an email attachment to speed things along. Thank goodness you've tested and found the problem before communication with the mfg plant is unavailable.

On a similar note, I called the Engineer Dept for JKL lamps to get the formula for computing draw down time of a 12v deep cycle battery hooked up to my mini flourcent lamps. I heard him mutter " Damn calculator" in the background, and he arrived at a solution to my question after some time, but he never did give me the formula. Results were very good, but I still want to know how to get there from here. The folks at Radio Shack couldn't tell me either. Oh well, I'll get there on my own eventually, like always. Unless.....

Ahhh.....hurdles.

800-888-ONAN. Before you talk to them check to make sure you're looking at an original wire. Color doesn't mean much to the shadetree types.

(P=EI) Power, volts, current

Amps = .005

Volts = 500

Power = 2.5 Watts X 1.2 (loss) = 3 W

3W X 5 hours per day = 15W hours 15/12v = 1.3Ah

Battery = 2350 amp hours

2350/1.3 = 180 days on a full draw down of the battery, or 90 days on a 50% draw down.

Sounds good to me. Correct?

Battery = 2350 amp hrs? That would be a HUGE battery. If of the lead-acid type, I would estimate its weight to be about 1000 pounds. Also, 500 volts? No way. Check your numbers again.

Allow me to read directly from the packaging of my 3.2 x 100mm fouorscent lamps and drivers.

Input voltage DC = 6v or 12v Max input current in milliamps = 400-500 (or .005} typical input current = 200-250 milliamps Output current in mArms = 5 Output open circuit Vrms = 700-850 Vrms {or Volts} Typical output voltage with lamp for each driver is between 150 and 500 volts.

Also WARNING/SHOCK: The lamp driver develops HIGH VOLTAGE (emphasis theirs) insulate all lamp to driver connections before operation.

Is there something wrong in my calculations?

These are the specifications given to me by Empire Battery company for a Komatsu 120 trackhoe battery set. Each 12v battery yeilds 2350 Amp hours and weighs in at about 30lbs. In tandem they drive the 24v system in the hoe. A lot less than your guess, ya think, huh?
