Brian Imager@home.com is a moron - did you discover your intelligence quotient in a cracker jack box?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

It seems Mr. Brian keeps insisting that I am a troll (whatever that is) for posting relevent issues related to BC Hydro (oops I said 333 instead of 233 devices, sorry Einstein). Me thinks Mr. Brian should cut down on Chai Late Grande, and watch more soaps, cause obviously reading posts on this forum is far more than his nervous system can handle, or his brain for that matter.

Steady up SamIam...

Your posts are worth the read, but I count Brian a friend and you're acting like a child.

You shouldn't believe everything you read, and I agree with questioning the PR flaks, BUT you should've listened to your mother about being nice...

sam:

It wasn't just that you were 50% off in the number of date issues found. The main problem was that you were 242,000 off in the number of date sensitive devices. Both errors are very large, and both errors just happen to favor your preferred position. Coincidence?

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), November 24, 1999.

Sorry, but I don't like my name being plastered all over the place as a troll, pure and simple. And Flint, the numbers were correct. BC Hydro had to inventory 250,000 devices. 8000 are date sensitive. ooopss, sorry sorry sorry. What's your point?

-- samIam (dr@seu.ss), November 24, 1999.

Well samIam as I have mentioned on my previos post, I am sorry about calling you a troll if you made an honest mistake. But you made a very serious mistake.

There is enough panic being started without adding to it. I call the pollies to task and I will call the doomers to task also if the situation warrants it.

Specially if it is my back yard that someone is questioning.

Here is the latest statement from BC Hydro

 BC Hydro: Year 2000 Update

Year 2000 test has all computerized BC Hydro generating plants operating in Year 2000

BC Hydro has advanced its generating plants to Year 2000 without a single glitch. All applicable generating plants those that use date- dependent computerized technology have operated successfully in "Year 2000 mode" for periods of two weeks each.

BC Hydros Year 2000 enterprise coordinator, Seiki Harada, says this province-wide initiative is one of many integrated tests the utility has undertaken as part of its Year 2000 preparedness efforts.

"During the past three months, 12 power plants generated Year 2000 power into the provincial power grid for a two-week period each," Harada said. "Not one single Year 2000-related incident was experienced during the testing period, and we expect the same performance during the actual rollover."

Out of 34 generating plants across the province, 12 use mission critical date-sensitive computerized technology to operate. Technology in the other plants is either electromechanical not computerized or not date-dependent.

Computers, microprocessors and embedded controls in each of the 12 plants were advanced to January 1, 2000 and operated there for a week. They were then advanced to February 28, 2000 and operated there for another week. February 28, 2000 was chosen because it was identified as a potential problematic date related to the leap year. For both date periods, each plant rollover test was a success.

"As a precautionary measure, we staggered the 12 plant rollovers over three months," Harada explained. "In case we encountered any unexpected problems, we wanted to limit them to one or two plants. Fortunately, and just as we expected, Year 2000 incidents were not an issue."

BC Hydro has been preparing for Year 2000 since 1994. A comprehensive inventory, assessment, remediation and testing program revealed 223 mission critical devices requiring Year 2000 remediation. These were fixed in May 1999, and BC Hydro does not expect service disruptions due to Year 2000-related issues arising from its systems.

In my 1000 + posts on the forum my research has only been questioned a couple of times. Spelling and syntax is always off though.

So lets ditch this subject and move on samIam. If not I love a good arguement, just ask Ken Decker.

-- Brian (imager@home.com), November 24, 1999.

sam:

My points are, first, you made four errors: (1) You called all 250,000 device date sensitive when only 8000 actually were date sensitive; (2) You omitted mention of the 8000 sensitive devices (which of course would have contradicted your first assertion); (3) You exaggerated the number of devices which were remediated by 50%; and (4) You said these devices "wouldn't work" when in fact according to BC Hydro every last one of these devices had "benign" failure modes.

Second, EVERY ONE of these errors lies in the direction of painting a more pessimistic picture than actually exists. You might claim carelessness, though it's awfully well directed. If an optimist had made four errors clearly in HIS favor, this would be called LIES by everyone here who didn't call it SPIN.

However, greatly in your favor, you apologize for getting the numbers wrong. Good enough, and thank you. If only people like Milne and GoldReal could consider such a thing!

Kurt and Flint

Thanks for the backup.

samIam

I will post on the top of the forum that I apologized if you wish for calling you a troll but I am sure this thread will attract lots of attention :o)

-- Brian (imager@home.com), November 24, 1999.

Kurt, Congratulations, you have got these fellows acting like they are polite Canadians! Maybe we will take over the world.(should I add a smiley face so as not to scare the Americans...)

-- gary elliott (gelliott@real.on.ca), November 24, 1999.

SamIam,

Do you want an apology on top of a house or next to a mouse? However, you like apologies served (with or without green eggs and ham), I imagine that most people are unsuccessful in getting an apology when they call the other person a moron. Brian is hardly a moron. In fact, he is greatly appreciated here for his research among so many other contributions such as the preparation archives. And as far as I can tell, Brian is not only highly intelligent; he is a rugged man who knows how to make a snow cave and carve a stone like so few others.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

I love this thread, it shows the classic difference between Americans and Canadians. Our flame wars are polite.

And my employers wonder why I rejected their $20K raise and National Interest Waver Greencard and resigned to return to Canada. After living in Chicago for a year and a half, I'll gladly take the higher taxes and lower wages for the better quality of life in Canada. I miss living in a city where I can go anywhere anytime and not worry about my personal safety and I miss polite drivers. Hey, I'll admit the Canadian health system leaves something to be desired, but its damn better that the bloody HMO's they have here.

To answer the Yanks, yes I don't like it and yes I'm going back to where I came from. I'm flying back to Canada on Dec 19th, because I don't want to be in Chicago if its more than a BITR, because it will turn into a bloody war zone.

Hey America is good for Americans, but I'm too Canadian

Sam,

You stupid punk. You have just picked on my favorite forum friend, and I will never forgive you. I will forever, and always, protect him with my .38's, or, my .357's.

You wanna suk my .50 mm dude? I'm more than you can handle. I'm blonde, I'm beautiful, I'm bad, and right now, you are pissin' me off. I would die without regret to eradicate vermin like you.

Sam - Apologize to Brian, he is outstanding - period!!!

-- karla (karlacalif@aol.com), November 24, 1999.

Apologize to Brian??? Are all you people friggin nuts? I'll accept his apology, nothing more. Anyone who goes around shooting from the hit has to be accountable. I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that the next time someone called me a troll, watch out. Well Brian walked into that one....

-- samIam (dr@sue.ss), November 25, 1999.

Sam clearly "slept on it" and apologizes to Brian, who is also a dear and trusted cyber-friend.

In fact... Brian's AWESOME!

Harumph!

Sam... if you can think of a new title for this thread, I'll change it.

Diane

Diane and others

Thanks for the support, as you may well know I am a sensitive sort and tears were welling in my eyes upon reading such a condemnation of my views on the subject.

Well maybe not.

I personally would like to put my money where my mouth is and suggest not changing this thread, just to point out that if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

And samIam have settled this matter in true Canadian form. Go out to the parking lot for a scrap and then have a beer afterwards :o)

What other countries give their kids sticks and tell them to hit people with them.

Keep your liners dry folks.

Diane - cleanup on isle 5! (just kidding)

But seriously, on the "Russian Game Show" thread there is a post by a Mr. Happy that is not very nice, directed at you and one of the other sysops.

"I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that the next time someone called me a troll, watch out. Well Brian walked into that one...."

OH NO! =:-O The Revenge of the Trolls" !

Just kidding Sam...please don't flame me...

And be nice now. BTW, which part of the country are you in?
