Reality check - everyone is worried about Y2K

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

On the news, they did a man-on-the-street and NOONE is planning to be out and about new years eve. Every time I open the paper now, I read about the sudden resignation of the president of so and so, today was a software firm. Everyone is worried. The show stopper will be as follows:

Honey, I know nothing is gonna happen, but why don't we get a few extra cans of beans, just in case...

When that happens, the party will really be starting. When the DGI start waking up, watch out.......

I think it will happen when one or two or both happens to each one individually:

They will round the corner of the store on a typical day, everything will be going along just fine, their hands will reach for an item they normally purchase, they will place it in their carts, stop seemingly dead in their tracks, turn back, and stare at the price tag with a big, "Huh?"

OR/Both They will find themselves going in circles asking, "Am I losing it? I could have sworn this is where I have always purchased these 3 items for the past so many years! Huh? Huh?"

There is one possible struck of luck in this: I and another had an abrupt encounter with some hyperinflated items at a store, she then checked once again in Los Angeles County to see what the scoop is there. I heard from her this morning and she said it is all very "normal" looking in Los Angeles County.

This is suggestive to me, that last year when Y2Kers discussed and speculated whether the major areas would have the resources as top priority, there is the possibility we're starting to see the answer. In Los Angeles County those hyperinflated items are still "normal," the populace can purchase fruitcakes, canned baby corn etc, but not in my area. To now purchase some items I have to get on the freeway and literally commute to another area.

The luck in this is that if the major and pertinant areas are getting top priority they will be the last to panic or riot. The highest density areas are still living with a sense of total normalcy. There sure isn't a sign plastered all over the car driving along in the next lane, warning them it is a person having to commute to their area to purchase an increasing number of items.

Sam is a troll I am afraid.

The two threads below are posted by "Sam" and are a waste of time. Why he would like to choose my home province is beyond me.

BC Hydro has 250,000 date sensitive devices, yet only 333 didn't work. Should we be worried by these logistics...
