? Help for HTML impaired? Sysop or others..

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

There was a comment in one of the posts I read yesterday that irritated the hell out of me. I cannot remember where it was and given the number of threads that are creating on a daily basis now, I can probably be excused for having a "senior moment". I do recall the poster as being generally someone whose posts I read even if our views do not match.

Essentially the post made a comment about how tired the poster was of "dealing" with people who are HTML impaired and do not know how to create a link. Instead of firing back a pissy comment, I did wait a few hours.

Given that we are not all on the same level playing ground here, is there a quick tutorial I can access or that someone can send me that will help me figure out how to create a link or copy and paste onto the text box?? I have tried to make it work without success.

I have Windows 98/version I and Office 97 as well as some Acrobat stuff installed. I generally log into this forum thru AOL, but I do have another alternative ISP. Over this weekend I plan to run the Microsoft disc as well as get version 2 and download any other miscellany I need to stay up and running. Any assistance will be appreciated.

There are a lot of smart people on this forum, and we all have our specialty. I will duke it out with people about voice/data communications, telecom readiness, or comment on logical preps and gardening, but give me and I suspect some others a break and help us "learn to fish" on this topic, thanks.

Nancy,

You dont need any special software or resources to plant a hotlink, so dont worry about your discs or operating system.

HTML is simply made up of text-based commands which the browser reads and interprets. To tell the browser that something is a command and not just ordinary text, you place a particular set of brackets around it. Thats all. So long as you get the syntax right, and your commands make sense in HTML, they will work fine.

regarding which brackets to use. . . at the end, use ">" and at the beginning, use "<"

Its not possible to show that the other way round, because the browser would read everything inside the brackets as a (bad) HTML command. I hope you get the idea tho.

For good help and advice on simple HTML codes and commands, just hit your favourite search engine, and search for "HTML for beginners"

There are more webpages devoted to this than you can wave a stick at.

Kind Regards

W

You can write a link into your reply you type it. To create a link which will read "abcd", and send the clicker to "http://www.abcd.com", type

[a href = "http://www.abcd.com"]abcd[/a]

into the text of your reply, BUT be sure to replace my "["s with "<"s and my "]"s with ">"s.

Practise below if you want. Don't be scared: you'll not break anything and the worst that can result is a dodgy link.

Don't worry too much about it: personally I'd rather read a post which has sources (even if not hot-linked) than one dripping with hot- links but devoid of sources. People can always copy and paste into the URL box, after all.

thanks. I will print out your replies and play with this later today. I figured this was not rocket science, just needed a few tips.

Thanks again!!

Grrrrrrrrrr I hate elitist snobbery.

Nancy,

This stuff is as easy as pie. Anytime you see something you would like to use. Like colors, italics...whatever, click the right side of your mouse button and hit on "view source"....you will see the html code that the person used. You'll learn it fast enough doing this.

Click view souce on the folling examples...

italics The "/i" is a "stop" so the rest of your sentence doesn't end up in italics.

bold

Mr.Andy Ray

Also, the keyboard cut and past command comes in handy when your copy html code.

highlight the code you wish to use...then press at the same time the "ctrl" key and the "c" key...that's copy.

When you want to paste it somewhere press the "ctrl" key and the "v" key.

Now you're an html expert...

Tell that jerk to go "pound salt" as my Mother use to say.

I host my own Website. I do it myself. I don't know HTML. I use a tool that does it for me. I am embarrassed.

Thank you for a safe place to play. And thanks to the linkmeister for taking the time to do the links for us.

Here is my try:

Sally's Y2K Kitchen

I hope it works.

As I have said MANY MANY MANY times -- you don't need no stinking links. Fugedaboudit. Not necessary. No HTML necessary. Just type the frickin URL in your post. Anyone who wants to go to that URL, all they have to do is highlight it, copy, then paste into their browser "Location" window (or the Microsucks IE equivalent), and hit "Enter". This is elementary Windows copy and paste crap -- used in every application. What is the big fricking deal.

Diane, Chuck, PHIL -- again -- how about a FAQ page including crap like this?

A,

True, MOST, but not all browsers allow you to paste into the address line. For example, I have IE-3.02/SP1 (3.02 ships with Win/95) on my old backup 386 machine, running Win/3.11, and it doesn't. The paste command is greyed when the cursor is in the address box.

Anyway, it's still easier, and quicker, to click, than it is to hilite, edit, copy, place cursor, erase contents, edit and paste!

Plus, having a link allows you to right click on the link, and "open in new window," saving more time since you can then close that window when done, rather than backup and reload the previous page.

Tick... Tock... <:00=
