12-year-old charged in school slaying

Updated 6:58 PM ET November 22, 1999

DEMING, N.M., Nov. 22 (UPI) A seventh-grade boy was charged with first-degree murder Monday in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Araceli Tena during lunch at a Deming, N.M., school last Friday.

State Magistrate Fred Gifford read the charge along with six others to the 12-year-old boy who was ordered held in custody at the Luna County Juvenile Detention Center. Another hearing will be scheduled in a few weeks.

The boy also faces one charge of first-degree attempted murder and six counts of aggravated assault for using his .22 caliber pistol against other students and school officials during the lunchtime shooting at Deming Middle School.

Tena, who was shot in the back of the head, died Saturday at Thomason Hospital in El Paso, Texas.

The boy, who was born in Deming but lives in Palomas, Mexico, across the border, was a student at the middle school along with the victim.

Police said the boy and Tena, who was from Columbus, N.M., apparently did not know each other well. They believe she was a random target.

The boy's family said the 12-year-old, who had complained about bullies at the Deming school, may have been trying to take his own life.

"He told me that he was going to kill himself, that he had the gun to his head and that he was pushed when the gun went off and hit the girl," said the boy's father, a mechanic in Palomas.

The father said the boy had suffered from depression since his mother died of cancer in February and he had worked with school counselors.

Students returned to classes Monday at Deming Middle School and counselors were on hand to help the students. A brief memorial service was conducted outside the building in memory of the victim.

Under New Mexico law, minors younger than 14 can't be charged as adults.

Normally the media would be ALL OVER this. Think they're starting to realize that maybe they've gone too far with this anti-gun thing?

Answers

--this might be an answer, if you hold to conspiracies.....quote "The father said the boy had suffered from depression since his mother died of cancer in February and he had worked with school counselors."< P> OK, depression=mind and mood altering drugs. there started to be a flap about ritalin-the parent in a capsule-after the last big shootings. It was starting to get a bad name, questions being asked, some of the HUGE numbers were being brought out of use of ritalin, the percentages are growing fast. And also the side effects. Mucho bad press for the controllers. They need another scam, plus this was only a "single"

Now, no way am I saying that this is so, this is pure theorizing, based on zip, as a possible explanation about the no press covering angle. Although it was covered, saw it several places. You also have to look at what other stuff WAS in the news that day as well, see what the "case de jour" might have been, where the meat was.

I look at any "potential" "conspiracy-like" event from a "who benefits" angle, and "accident/maybe/odds against" angle. That's two quick ones, just to get going. After that, look to see if it's a misdirection, a headline grabber, here's one, the grinning buffoon in charge's cruise missile attack on mud huts in afghanistan right when monica story broke big time is a classic example of that. Then look if "they" can kill two birds with one stone, like this---> "OH BOY, better LOOKOUT for all them cyberterrorists around jan 1st, cuz anything that happens , it's a-gonna be cyber-terrs, yessirree, nope, we're on track and all remediated up now, ever little thing is fixed",- --see, they get to demonize a strawman, while covering up their collective butts at the same time, all with a few press releases. Very cost effective psywar.

As to that poor kid who got shot, and the shooter, I have zip clues, but certainly like postulating. I DON'T think it's a plot, this shooting, because primarily, only one victim.

When I have a LOT of stuff, I post on it, my conclusions. Sometimes I change. New data. A different way of seeing it. But when it just gets more and more and more smelling like a skunk, then pepe le pew it is.< P> ---word cammie zog

Well let's see...

He wasn't white. He was Mexican national (illegal alien?) His mommy died.

Doesn't fit the profile. Too many sympathy points, here.

Why wasn't this on all the national news-feeds?

EASY - THE KILLER WAS NOT WHITE.

Generally, when non-whites kill or do something terrible, it does not make it past the local paper. I've seen a *lot* of such cases.

Well, I'm going to put my "Party like it's 1999" hat back on now, and go Celebrate Diversity. Cheers.

Yeah, kinda like the 13 y/o who was brutally savagaed by two homosexual men and killed in Arkansas just recently. Did that make the news? Not hardly. But if two white guys brutally kill a homosexual, the world is coming to an end. Sheesh!

Jollyprez, Bingo! not pollitically correct, does not make TV. I'll say one thing for our media elite, they are totally predictable. BTW this is how I know we're being spoonfed PC bullshit on Y2k "readiness".

Exactly...Just like the Jaspar Dragging deaths, the same weekend in New Orleans three black teens broke into a handicapped, wheelchair bound 72 year old grandmother of 6's home, and then, after raping her repeatedly, they put the knives to her. That wasn't enough though, after cutting off most of her fingers, they soaked her (still alive) in gas, and lit her aflame. Not one bloody mention of it by the mainstream press. Don'cha just love the media nd the Clintons?

Well, here in the Houston area we heard about it for days on the TV news. As I watch local and national, could not verify if it was on both or only local. Was top story right after the Texas A&M thing:(

As one of the few "token liberals" (or perhaps "recovering liberal" is more like it these days) I sadly have to agree with some of the sentiments above.

Now here's the catch: does anyone notice a not-so-subtle racism in the Liberal Media? As you pointed out, when someone "of color" commits a horrific crime the media seems to behave as if it's just business as usual for "those people". But when some coddled white kid commits some atrocity it does tend to get plastered all over the headlines in a "where did we go wrong, WASP's are not supposed to do this kind of thing" manner. In my mind I think many (but certainly not all) liberals have a very strong racist streak hidden under a very thin veneer of PC. That's one of the reasons I've more or less stopped being one: blatantly prejudiced people I can handle, goody goody hypocrites REALLY get up my nose! I think Chomsky hits the nail right on the head in his critiques of liberalism.

the media is subject and selective, regional and profit-motivated. if "racial" war does erupt in america, rest assured that the media will play its part to the hilt.

"racism is thought and action predicated upon the notion of 'race,' and the consequent perception of 'racial' differences."

that having been said, it is an established fact that the most prolific butchers of all time on this continent and in europe have been predominantly "white-skinned people."

RZN - Mao, Pol Pot (sp?), Amin, notwithstanding, eh RZN?

Mass murder is an equal opportunity destroyer, and the instigators come in all races.

Please read a little history before making your *own* rascist statement.
