For ALL NEWBIES and Regulars

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

To the Sysops and Regulars of TB2000, this is my response to the attacks of late. To the New People visiting TB2000, I hope this is informative and will give you a better perspective of some of the stuff you will see here.

Welcome to this forum. We all hope you find the information here an asset to your quest to learn more about Y2K and it's potential impact on your and your family's life. There is a tremendous amount of information contained in the archives and a constant discussion of various new items of relevance to personal preparedness and understanding what is apparently going on in industry, government, banking, utilities, programming efforts and with individuals like yourself.

You will find throughout the various threads of discussion, much disagreement, some foul language and in the more recent threads, much attempted disruption of this forum. If something offends you, simply skip the thread and try another, I will re-emphasize that there is a tremendous amount of verifiable information here.

Y2K is a real problem (in my opinion), but ultimately, the decision to prepare or not prepare is completely your own. I hope (and am sure most others here feel) that you may find information here that will assist you in your research and your decision as to how best care for yourself and your family. Feel free to ask about anything you feel you need to know.

In respect to the various 'Freedom of Speech' issues you will likely encounter and the accusations of censorship scattered throughout the threads, there are a group of people who have decided that this place is not cool and should be disrupted to the point of shutting down. In all fairness to their opinions, here is a link to their forum. Please go check them out for yourself, meet them, talk to them and just like here, form your own opinion.

Here is an excerpt from a recent thread from this other site. I admit that this does not represent the entire thread being presented and I did selectively Cut and Paste (primarily for space reasons), however, it will demonstrate the various positions and opinions of the people over there. Again, in fairness to all, here is a link to the thread the following excerpts were taken from.

TB2000 is not a normal place whose opinions "JUST" differ. It is a classic cult. Normally I would agree with P******. Not this time. As cpr has pointed out, it is a recruiting place for anti-society folks. I consider it a public service of anyone involved in shuting that TB2000 cult down. They deserve it. Yes, it is sad....and pitiful...but wisdom is required here -- not feeling sorry for mentally off people. If shutting down that place keeps one borderline person from being recruited and maybe striking out at some innocent person after rollover, it will have been worth the effort to shut it down. OR FROM THE CREATION OF ONE DOOM ZOMBIE WHO SHOOTS SOMEONE KNOCKING ON THE DOOR NEXT YEAR!!! Think how that place affects the mentally unbalanced borderline people out there. Please do your civic duty and have the place shut down. Settle for nothing less!!! Someone's life just may depend on it. Sobering thought, but true. Think with your head and do the right thing; not with your heart and just look away and let the recruiting and pathology continue. They will not change. Only get worse. We don't need to allow them to spawn any more bombers or other anti-society types. PLEASE DO YOUR DUTY AND HELP YOUR COUNTRY -- BY SHUTTING THAT PLACE DOWN!!!

"NO one expects the Spanish Inquisition!" Find a real cause to fight for. There are several available.

It is not an anti-society forum. It is pro self-suffiency with a healthy dose of skepticism (about media, governments, etc.). If you don't like it because it does not include your viewpoints that's tough.

No. My duty to my country, and the ideas that my forefathers died for, is not to get the place shut down. Moved to a non-educational or non-government wire, perhaps. But the ideas must be free to flow, to stand or fall on their own merits. The way you defeat them is by knocking down the ideas with the facts, not censoring the ideas all together. Freedom of speech protects all speech, but especially the speech we do not like. Sorry to disagree, but it's the way I believe it is. J******** -A computer glitch will not bring about the end of civilization. It takes hordes of panicking people to do that.-

Between this forum and the one linked to above, you should find more than enough information on which to form your opinion of Y2K.

The good news is that our SYSOPS stand ready to do whatever is necessary -- as they have been doing yesterday and today -- to make sure that the looney-toones at anti-Y2K preparation web sites do not succeed in their attempts to disrupt this forum. It is sad to know that there are people who not only will not prepare for themselves and their families, but actually think that they then have the right to prevent YOU from preparing for yours.

I couldn't believe how insecure & fanatical the Polly-Denialists are!!! How can they call US Anti-American when THEY are the ones trying to force feed THEIR ideas onto us???? What terrible fear and angst they exhibit. Their opinions HAD been welcomed here until they began their policy of deliberate disruption.

Since y2k preps can be regarded as a kind of insurance, I wonder if these people believe that health, life, home and auto insurance (among others) are also unnecessary????? After all, most insurance premium money is 'lost' every year too. (Assuming, as they do, that NOTHING 'unpleasant' happens for Y2K). Curious logic & thinking on their part.

Hello to all newcomers to the board, My opinion is that we will all experience a few glitches, some severe, some not so bad. The point of the matter is the no one knows the extent of the number of areas that needed to be fixed, the quality of the fixes (potential data corruption), how critical are the systems that will have glitches, and the effect the interdependency of the world economy. It is a fact that many other nations will not be as ready for Y2K as the U.S. is (or at least as ready as the press tells us).

With that in mind, I believe it is only prudent to prepare, personally for at least 2 weeks worth of disruptions. Please do your own research though and do what you feel is necessary. I wish you well.

P.S. Please don't take any personal attacks to heart, we're currently infested with a group of irresponsible people who like to bait and insult others. We call these people "Trolls". There are plenty of other people who are willing to sit down and rationally discuss any questions you might have.

Again, I wish you well, and welcome to the board.
