i have an old 1x cd rom drive that i am not using. if i were to connect it to a MPeG decoder card and a power supply could it play VCDs as a stand alone unit. if not what is it that im missing?

A 1x CDROM drive? It belongs in a musuem. I don't think it can even play a CD at the speed required for VCD playing.

Why not Dave? The speed of a VCD is 1x, like Audio-CDs.

The question is, where are you going to connect the MPEG card to? Where are you goin'to hit "PLAY", "PAUSE", etc.? You obviously need a full computer because the buttons of the CD-ROM only work with Audio-CDs.

I am also searching for the same thing , but i am having a 52x CD drive, some mpeg decorder boards are available form sony , that we want to connect a single wire form the drive to the board for play VCD I made it with audio cd player to vcd but i doent know how to attach the board with CD rom if you got any idea please send to me from M.P.Ratheesh ratheesh@magnum.barc.ernet.in

well i've been searchin same thing for about last 6 mon's. i made avcd by using mpeg card into my acd player. however you can better make a dvd player using mpeg2 stand alone type card. it may be like a pci card but it can also be played stand alone. you need to have dvd rom drive power supply unit. and mpeg 2 decoder card. try search the web www.diotech.com.tw search products and you'll find taiwan's products lioke these. its better to buy a cd loader unit, decoder card and power supply unit and attach them correctly. you may build a vcd mp3 etc. these are available in the electronics market. it may take 2500/tk bangladeshi price. and one more thing, CD ROM DRIVE CAN NOT BE CONVERTED INTO VCD PLAYER.

I am also searching for a stand-alone, hardware based MPEG decoder solution but I wish to "read" the data stream from flash or SRAM instead of VCD via a pickup head -something similar to solid state MP3 as opposed to CD based MP3. Any ideas?
