Paula,

It figures. No politicians in sight to address the biggest management problem in history. Who says so.. Koskinen. Thanks again for fighting the good fight against all odds.

It's 2:05 AM EST and I just finished watching the press conference. This was the most powerful Y2K pessimistic news I have ever seen! There is a huge difference in reading a press release and seeing it live. A transcript of the statements and questions MUST be published here...anyone?

From my notes: Rep. Horn stated that the Department of Defense, Health and Human Services, the Treasury (Yes, the IRS is still inventoring systems), the Air Traffic Controller System and the Department of Justice are still not ready.

When asked by a reporter which systems in DOD weren't ready, he said, Some in the pentagon, Abrams Tanks, the Army National Guard, some in Korea, the Defense Attache, the southern Command and some Intelligence Systems.

In response to a question, Rep Tom Davis said that he expected the Congressional Offices to be barraged with people who weren't getting their checks.

Rep Horn, said that "We may be some of those people."

Horn, when asked about the ATC, said that he hoped that their work would be done and that he was holding a ticket for a flight on Dec. 31 unless Jane Garvey cancels the flight. He said that they should have started working on the ATC in 1989 like Social Security, which he added is ready.

One of the problems he had seen was procrastination. He added that we can count on nothing flying that is not totally safe.

He also mentioned that the FBI has reported that hackers will be trying to crash systems too.

Horn also said that we simply don't know what is going to happen and the real emphasis should be on testing. There is a lot of interaction in federalism. It is a very complicated thing and there are interactions with other governments, individual states and the private sector. One Senator wrote to the President about it and never heard a word in reply.

Rep Connie Morella(sp) repeated many times that people shouldn't panic and later said "people must not panic." Do not take money out of the bank and DO prepare with food and rations.

When asked about public housing and if the problem was just a paperwork thing, Horn said that heat and elevators were the biggest problem especially in the Northeast, North Central and Northwest regions. Also, the Fuel Assistance program was not ready.

And on top of all of this, he admitted that some agencies were lying about their compliancy readiness and that in one case they had sent in the GAO and confirmed this.

--------------------------------

To me, these announcements (and there were many more) are the smoking gun of Y2K.

If just these programs are not ready, I can see rioting, Martial Law and Depression.

I just went from a 6 to an 8.

Someone please, post a transcript!

-- Cant Say (Chicken@NoWay.com), November 23, 1999.

Has anyone been able to come up with a transcript, or link to same? Thanks.

-- Lilly (homesteader145@yahoo.com), November 23, 1999.

What's your opinion of the people on the panel(s)?

Qualified? Concerned? Pushing an agenda or politics? I saw almost no purely "technical" or "engineering" types? Who are they relying on for their information?

-- Robert A. Cook, PE (Marietta, GA) (cook.r@csaatl.com), November 23, 1999.

Cant Say, thanks for a sobering report.

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), November 23, 1999.

Is it going to be repeated?
