Don't any of you have a regular day job?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I became of aware of this, only because I have been off work for the past two days. The MAJORITY of the posts are being done in the early a.m. Don't you Guys have a day job? Are you ALL retired? What's the deal here?

Well I at least have a regular NIGHT job, which means I'm around early in the AM (gotta let the cat out --errrrrr--move the car so the spouse can go to work and then I'm up for an hour or so) and then in the wee hours as I get home.

Job???? Do you have to have a job? I was told that if I actually became employed that my benefits would disappear. Wouldn't want that to happen.

Ooops, gotta go wrestling is back on tht tube...

I don't know how it really matters, but my job results in days off in the middle of the week

So sometimes I'm here and sometimes I'm not.

Just a reminder Johnny, not everyone here is in the same time zone as you. In fact, some people here are already in tomorrow.

We don't all live in the USA, you know ... It's all a question of time.

Ah, the luxury of it all. Sipping Starbucks and reading TB2000, what could be better? I'm waving to all the commuters now.....

Johnny, even your monicker sounds as if you may be a troll, since it's a term frequently used here. Sorry, but our trolls take different aliases from time to time. But in the event that you are not, and you have only been here for two days, the better question you should be asking is, "How do I catch up and get prepared in only 40 days, folks?"

I do a Y2K hotline. I have all day to fearmonger. :-)

I'm curious to know how it is any of your business?

-- Paula (chowbabe@pacbell.net), November 19, 1999.

Sure, I have a job. I'm a Systems Programmer and Network Administrator. I work days, nights, weekends, holidays, you name it. My GI boss doesn't have any problems with my lurking on this forum, or any other Y2K related site. Y2K is part of my job.

This T1 line at work sure is nice...

Amen, Sysman :-) I work some funky, yet flexible hours myself, mostly in front of a computer. As long as I get it completed close to schedule without any surprizes or budgetary overruns, TPTB in my situation don't mind. Sometimes I telecommute, other times I drive in to work on-sight during the evening hours when most of the users are sleeping. Big pipes...gotta love 'em :-)

Other days, I have to attend meetings during the day. I pop in to the closet space assigned to me to check email for that location, maybe surf a tad, then move on.

Internet abuse at work is prevalent, at least from my experiences. At one place, they have software which tracks surfing activity from IP addresses on the network...the sex and jokes sites tend to be most frequently visited. It's not just the grunts and the people in the trenches abusing this privilege ;-)

The guy running the network knows I visit here, but he lurks here too and considers it to be a valuable research tool.

Haven't worked in a couple of years. Why work now?

-- Mara (MaraWayne@aol.com), November 19, 1999.

I almost always post from work.

-- nothere nothere (notherethere@hotmail.com), November 19, 1999.

Hey if there are people on this site maybe if there telecommunications go down with there computers they can get on this site and give us a 10+ hour warning so we can fix all of our problems. I have heard this stated by really DGI politicians.

-- squid (Itsdark@down.here), November 19, 1999.

I work 3 nights a week as a homecare Registered Nurse! That makes 4 days off and lots of free time. I'm HERE during my free time. :)

-- Debi (LongTimeLurker@shy.com), November 19, 1999.

I work at home, and like Sysman, I work round the clock hours. I usually don't go to bed until daybreak, wake up around 10am for a few hours to catch up on e-mail, make calls, etc. then back to bed for an hour or two nap. As long as my work gets done, no one cares. Why should they?

See y'all in a few hours...it's Nap Time!!

JSP....You just gotta know that if the net went down many employers would see a remarkable jump in productivity.

Me....I publish CD-ROMs on Solar power, write on occasion, run and work road trips to solar energy fairs...and prep. Wouldn't ever want a "real" job again. I enjoy staying up late and getting up late.

Covering Y2K (daily, email newsletter) IS my job. Compulsively. 24/7. Don't ask about the pay rate -- LOL. And of course we all know how hard it is for the well-informed to be able to sleep...

Look, dude, running a country as I do, especially when you delegate the right tasks to the right people, doesn't need a whole lot of ongoing maintenance. More like a standby type deal. So, in between the bars and watching mudwrestling videos, I like to come here.

But thanks so much for asking.

Man or Woman[whichever you are]:

I find your question to be an attack. Do I have a job. Yea; one that you coundn't do. You couldn't even sign the papers that I have to sign. You probably couldn't find the way to the flights that I have to take. If you could, no one would accept you;they would leave you at the gate. Let's face it you are a person and should be treated as such. Otherwise, don't put on aires.

Best wishes,,,
