The chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. announced today in San Francsico that all banks operating in California are prepared for Y2K.

Of the 10,300 financial institutions the FDIC insures, only five have received Y2k assesments that are less than satisfactory, according to Donna Tanoue, the 17th chairman of the FDIC.

Tanoue declined to specify which five banks are not properly on track to deal with the coming of the millennium, but said they do not operate in California.

Tanoue said information about the readiness of particular banks is available on the FDIC's website.

Your Bank and Y2K

Today, more than 99.9 percent of banks and thrifts are prepared for the Year 2000. Parade magazine reported that the FDIC on its Web site has published a list of banks that are unprepared for Y2k. There is no such list on the Web site.

However, the FDIC does publish enforcement orders on the Web site-- orders that banks must follow or face fines.

To find out if an FDIC-supervised bank has a formal enforcement order against it for Y2K or any other reason, click on the "Try It!" link at the end of this paragraph; enter the name of the bank in the text box; and hit the "Search" button.

Most banks do not have formal enforcement orders against them. If you get the message "0 documents," the search found no enforcement orders for the bank you selected.

A friend just told me that the full California National Guard (he's a NG pilot) of about 12,000 people, that WERE supposed to be "called up" Dec. 29th to Jan 2nd or 3rd... have now been told to "stand down."

And only a couple (or 3?) brigades would be on duty now. Approx. 3,000 people.

What do you think this signals?

He thinks Y2K is hype. And he wasn't "dis-informing" me either.

He was absolutely DELIGHTED that he didn't have to go in and "sit around for five days" ...his words. (You don't fake that kind of emotion).

His PC is Y2K compliant, so all is right with his world.

*Sigh*

BTW, he IS a caring, big-hearted guy. Hope he's IS... okay... next year.

KCBS Radio in S.F. has been amazingly upbeat on Y2K the past few days, almost as if the gov was bumping up their "blowing sunshine up your...." campaign.

First bit I heard night before last was some guy from Treasury saying all was fixed, no reason for concern. Next came another report that Commerce was saying all would be well. Dept. of agriculture next stated there was no reason to store any food beyond enough for a "long holiday weekend" and that if folks began storing it would be the cause of any problems (!). Fimally this morning they had someone from Chevron saying they were fully Y2K prepared as far as production went (no mention of supply issues or the stuff in their readiness disclosure about FOF). The story was about refinery neighbors being concerned over Y2K readiness and safety...guess the stuff in the disclosure would have not been "assuring" enough.

Feels like the propaganda campaign is picking up....Makes me want to run to Costco immediatly! (Not sure what I'd buy but I'm sure I could find something useful. heck I can panic with the best of 'em)
