I can't find a local outlet for K-1 kerosene. A local distributor says that undyed #1 diesel is the same thing; he calls it "clear one". That is not my understanding, however. I have heard that kerosene is selling for over $2/gal and the #1 is about $1.30. Does anyone have the straight information on this, or an oil company url where it states clearly that they are or are not the same?

Also, I already have quite a bit of red dyed #1 diesel. If they are the same, other than staining the wick, are there any problems with burning this in kerosene lamps?

I found a synthetic portable heater fuel at LumberJack (California) Put out by Exxon called Clearlite.Says it provides Cleaner burning,Safer storage,Longer Wick life.At about 3.50 Per Gallon.I havent tried it yet.All my lamps are already full !

I found some kerosene at a convenience store (dyed) for $1.30/gallon. Recently I found another source for $1.00 gallon (clear)....depends on where you find it..... Look for the pumps at rural gas stations/convenience stores. I ask the locals on the outskirts of town - and they know where to get it (I'm in a major city, and it tends to be on the outskirts).

mmmmm is right about that. Easiest way -- drive to a nearby small town, look up a heating oil supplier, buy it from him. Cheaper -- and it's a lot cheaper than buying tin cans full in some home center.

FWIW, here in the beautiful northern Shenandoah Valley K-1 is available at many gas stations for $1.25/gallon +/-.

Folks: We are buying jet fuel from our local airport. It is called JP4. I am not sure of the price. Probably different everywhere. It is the highest grade of kerosene available,and burns the cleanest. My husband has used it for years. I burned diesel in my Kerosun space heater and lived with constant headaches from the smell and fumes. It was not a pleasant experience and I don't wish to repeat it. Best wishes.
