The iMac DV website at www.apple.com/imac mentions about a Sony Media Converter DVMC-DA1 which supposedly converts analague from vcr etc. and compresses it to DV through its firewire port to the imac.

I read somewhere that this sony device also codecs MPEG files

I have done alot of research on the Sony Media conveter. It will work with a Mac. No it doesnot encode Mpeg as far I have read about it. It uses the Sony DV codec in the box itself. I believe you can find more info at http://www.insanely-great.com/reviews/da1.html
