y2k Industry Shutdown.........................

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

First the oil pipelines, now the airlines are making noise. My question is, will alot of industries shut down over rollover. Remember the Dick Mills article on a 72 hour blackout? It stated it would roughly take 72 hours to get most of the power back on to most of the people. (3 days) .gov says 3 day storm! Is a three day shutdown the unspoken plan? Makes sense to me. That plan protects most of the physical equipment, now, doesn't it! Bring it back up sloooooowly, stop when you have a problem and fix. Start over again bringing it back up sloooooooowly. Stop when you have a............ yada,yada,yada..........

Y2KDave,

Here's some info, though I don't have the links handy. Perhaps Y2K Press Clippings will have them archived though:

1. Greece will be shutting down their banks.

2. Australian govt (think in New South Wales) is extending the Christmas & New Year's holidays (Christmas by 2 extra days, New Years by 1 1/2 extra days).

China is also planning a bank holiday on 31/12. The twist is that they are also planning to shut down their ATMs!

Could be. Will take a lot longer than 3 days to fix things that way. Especially if your spare parts suppliers are not as far along as you.

*sigh*

My suggestion would be to just declare the first week a Holiday. That buys the week plus a second weekend to work on the critical loads with less load on the grid.

As I have said in earlier threads that I expect that the shutdown in utilities will come after Christmas sometime. I expect after the holiday they will annonce how serious y2k really is and put in the federal response plan for y2k into effect. They will not bring all areas down at the same time. they will stagger them with the small cities going offline first, then the largest cities last. this will be done to upload new fixed software and to check critical equipment before bringing them back on line. this will be done to protect critical infrastructure from damage. The President will envoke the EEo's that give him the power to do this. The military will be on full force standby just to insure nobody gets any stupid Ideas. This will implemented by every country worldwide in a similar manner Jointly coordinated by the U.N.. IF all goes well most countries should be back up and running even if in a deminish capability in about three to seven days of the CDC. Expect a major annoncement to happen after Christmas that will explain their plan. Expect all airtraffic to be grounded during this time, and all none essential industry to be ordered closed for two weeks, and a dusk to dawn cerfew imposed until utilities are back online. Expect travel to be restricted to you nieghborhood only. Enjoy Christmas it will be along new year.
