WORD OF ADVICE ON FINANCIAL INDEBTEDNESS

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

i continually see these messages regarding maxing out credit cards, taking on debt--assuming that we might not have a financial system that would be able to make you pay for a while or ever. not just the crazy post this am but serious ones. not that an ethical person would--but i wouldn't do it if i were you.

if you should happen to be caught up with and wind up in bankruptcy court at any point in time--the judges looks for exactly this type of thing. spending sprees and their timing. don't do anything you wouldn't normally do or that is unethical--chances are you will reap what you sow at some point or other and it might put you in a real bind.

One should never put oneself in the position of depending on Y2K having to cause the end of the world as we know it to come out ahead.

A question posed yesterday regarding credit cards was the following: Would it be a reasonable thing to go ahead and take out cash advances on a credit card, AND HOLD ONTO THE CASH. Then, in early 2000, pay back the money if everything turns out OK (with a couple of months worth of interest charges); otherwise, use the cash to possibly get through some unpredictable things that might happen come January.

I'm not saying that I would do it, but it might be a reasonable thing to do, especially if you don't have a lot of cash in hand as you go into January.

Yes yes, max out those credit cards. Spend it on guns and ammo and MRE's.
