911 down & more

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

News radio reports; All 911 service down in part of county in Oregon due to "undetermined reason". Also-could connect with ISP early AM, but unable to recieve data transfer (no page loaded to browser after several attempts). Tried calling ISP on 800 #, heard "new" recording (US West area service) "we are unable to connect your call due to network difficulties". Local area service did work at the time. Area involved southwestern Oregon.

Note:I'd like to leave a real address just don't need the grief from a few bad eggs on this board I have already gotten. Thanks though to most of you for your willing sincere help.

Certainly it couldn't be the bug! No, we must first go through this long, ooh so very long, list if all other possible alternatives. Terrorism? No bomb blast and no foul language on the screen signed by the Bug Revenge Eco-Chip Folk. Wild animals roaming? A glance out the window shows no signs of an elephant stampede. Bill left unpaid? A quick glance doesn't reveal a problem. Perhaps in two weeks when they hav contemplated all other possibilities they'll consider the bug as the problem and deal with the mess. How unfortunate the people will have had to be delayed two senseless weeks of the service.

Primenet.com is also down - as of about 4 pm PST - undisclosed reason and says no ETA on when service will be restored. National problem, not regional hub.

Very interesting.

I couldn't log on all morning either and I am on the right coast.

US West had a problem with a fiberoptic cable; here's the message I received from my ISP in Roseburg:

At approx 1:30 this afternoon US West informed us that their fiber-optic link to Eugene had been damaged and severed our links to the Internet backbone. At this time, US West has told us they are actively working on the problem and have no estimated time as to when it will be resolved.

This problem is not only affecting MegaByte customers but also most long-distance and other Internet users in the area.

We apologize for any problems this has or will be causing you.

Heard it too on the radio news-the update about the fiber-optic outage . Said, "contractor cut cable about 1:30PM" and service was later restored (date 11/15/99). Understandable.... sure.

HOWEVER-No mention was made in the followup news report of the 911 service being down or restored (because it can be proven otherwise?) and more importantly, the phone service (internet & 800# & long distance) was affected at least as early as 5:30AM that day Pacific Time.

How many contractors do you know who work in the dark?
