greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Checked prices and availability of firewood about 50days ago. Sept.

No problem on supply and price was about $140.00 per chord.

Picked up the phone this morning (Fairfax County) placed six calls to firewood providers. Three had NO firewood, two others were backed up and were charging $200.00 to $250.00 dollars a chord.

Two of them mentioned busy due to Y2k.

One had 300 hundred orders to fill!!!!

Watching what people do not what they say!!

Fairfax County? Well no wonder. Paul Milne has scoffed up all the available firewood in that county.

Seasoned firewood (half birch, half maple) is under $100.00/cord in northern Minnesota. Demand is definitely above the usual level, too.

I'm not terribly knowledgable about most, but even I know that Paul Milne is from HALIFAX NOT Fairfax. READ PEOPLE! READ!

In SD, buffalo chips are goin for two bits a toss and road apples are bringin two bucks a bakers dozen. They was both cheaper in the summer but not to easy to handle. This time of year they start to firm up.

In-city price for a full cord, seasoned Oak & Cherry, delivered and stacked is $240.00 or $80.00 a face cord. (Three face cords = one full cord.) If the delivery guy needs to use a wheel barrow to get it from the truck to where you want it stacked it's an additional $10.00 per face. Prices are lower in the outlying areas. Prices quoted are for those living in N.W. Indiana.

Oh yah, I forgot to add that as of 3-4 weeks ago there was no problem with supply. Can't say about right now. Although the delivery guy told me that the owner had cut an extra 500 cords in preparation for the anticipated demand this season.

go see burke nursery QUICK. they have a whole stack and it is just sitting there. i pd 100 this summer for 1/2+ cord. (i know, i know but it was good n dry and convenient.) also there is this place in sterling i have seen.

Give any local tree service a call. I did, and they dropped a few cords in my yard for free. Of course, I had to cut it up and split it (these were full trunks), but it didn't cost anything but time and exercise. Of course, this approach works best in Spring and Summer, but that gives you time to let it dry out a bit. I cannot believe you people waited until mid-November to start looking for firewood!
