Why lurkers and phoney address users lose out...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Occurs to me that if you are interested in a particular thread here you ought to join in, and use a real address. That way, if somebody adds a great bit of info. to the thread, even weeks later, you can instantly receive an e-mail about it. So many times I have tried to send someone a bit of info. they asked for, to have my e-mail bounce back because their address was no good.

Great idea ... unless you do not want to have anyone know what your real e-mail address is, because it could then be traced to who you really are.

And why would anyone want to have a fake e-mail address, you ask? Well, let's say that you are preparing for Y2K, and besides supplies that might become very valuable next year, you also have a fair amount of cash, guns and ammo. Not to mention gold and silver coins.

I lose out on interest, because I do not have my money in the bank. I lose out on e-mail alerts, because my e-mail address is phoney. It's worth it.

IF, for example, I got as NEW email address.......called myself ,say, Boris Gudenov of Seattle and put the correct zip code..........how would anyone find out that Boris is actually Vladislav?? Plz explain ... I am innocent of all knowledge of this process. This makes wonder ..and worry....what else do I NOT know??? Gee, thanks.

I do not use a real name and address for the reasons stated in my fake address. There are address-scooping programs which prowl through boards like this.

In addition, in a previous forum a threat was made to me about stalking. And it was a GENEALOGY forum.

My email is real, but not my personal one. I just use one the email services on the net and make up a fake person profile for the email to use on the boards. I do read this email account once in a while and if I respond to a message, I use my real email. Someone would really have to want me bad to trace the IP address from a fake profile. Anyone can look up the provider you use from the IP address, but the provider would want a court order to give out any info about you.

Click the "New Answers" link on the main forum page to see when anyone responds to old threads. If you just focus on the ones you've been to before, this will alert you to responses to things you've said.

If you take one look at my e-mail address, you know that it's full of baloney.

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), November 21, 1999.

Well guess what??? I NOW have a real e-mail address that can be spammed... and I really won't care... I was anonymous prior because my personal e-mail became a joke when I gave it out here... well here we go again... The e-mail is REAL...

snoozin' under the tree...
