Quick TBY2K Sysop Note: Noticing A Real Delay In Posting With Some Posts & Not Others

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The forum software appears to be a tad slow in posting.

Not sure why, and have alerted Phil Greenspun. This morning I posted to a couple threads and 25 minutes later my responses are still not showing. However in the Admin side of the forum, they are.

Go figure.

Also the E-mail alert system seems to be out too. Phils message...

Something is horribly wrong with the email handler on this computer so we're giving up on sending any email notifications. Your posting will be enshrined in the database, of course.

Expected a 250 status line; got:
451 qq write error or disk full (#4.3.0)

Anyone else having a similar experience this morning?

Thanks,

Diane
A TBY2K Sysop

Answers

Diane,

Yes, me too! One of my response posts still hasn't appeared. I wonder what's up?

-- Deb M. (vmcclell@columbus.rr.com), November 15, 1999.

Me too, Diane.

I thought you'd lost my phone number, cut me off, dropped me like a prom dress, and ripped me out of all our pictures.

Glad to know it's just the dumb computer.

-- Lon Frank (lgal@exp.net), November 15, 1999.

Diane;

Not only that, but replies to some posts are showing up on some people's computers but not on others...... go figure!

I was chatting with someone on ICQ while reading posts, and they told me about KOS's response to Ken Decker's post on charity.... 10 minutes later, it still hasn't come up on mine when I refresh, or even when I leave Internet completely and come back on!

Humm.

Lets see if this appears... or not.

Diane

Posted responses to these two threads over an hour ago now... about 7:45 am PST and its now 8:50 am PST...

SYSOPs, repost this earlier thread: "If you are a pollyanna check this real audio out. If you are a doomer and you want, etc."

We need to be patient and give Phil time to respond.

*Sigh*

Diane, who just loves puters!

Diane, just a curiosity: Is the auto e-mail alert something that could be dragging down the performance of the software? If so, could that function be considered for elimination?? As we approach Jan 1, it seems to me that this site is going to consume itself with an increased load, and if something intensive like that could be disabled to improve overall performance, it might be worth it.

I've not had problems with new posts, but
responses first appear for a short time
then disappear for a longer time. They
always do this quick appearance first.

Diane : )

I got that message too. Interesting that Phil seems a tad in the dark about the cause.

This is like the number the telephone
company gives you to call when your
phone isn't working. :-}

LOL

I'm getting a kind of perverse pleasure thinking about Ol' Phil with computer problems.

Over at BIT (Bayou Institute of Technology), they gave me a list of words to use on mine. Tell Phil, if he don't get it fixed soon, I'll send him one or two real good 'uns.

((((And, Diane, I knew it all along)))

-- Lon Frank (lgal@exp.net), November 15, 1999.

Yea, it still ain't right. It seemed better last week, but that was in very early AM, when traffic was lite.

I've played with some of the settings in both Explorer and Netscape, and nothing seems to help.

Oh well, at least it shows up, sooner or later... <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), November 15, 1999.

My very last post took over an hour to show up. And the posts are now on the other threads. Took about an hour and a half. (At least it's NOT 3-days... yet).

*Sigh*

Who knows?

Gotta run.

"Patience glasshoppa..." takes on a new meaning!

KOS,

Let's let Phil deal with one thing at a time, but I will tell him, that if we need to, he can deactivate those alerts.

On the plus side, the trolls are unable to maintain continuity.

I posted to three threads this morning, two on Ken Deckers "charity," one on a a mountain pass in Washington being closed Dec. 1. Two showed then disappeared, then one reappeared, the one on the Mt. pass appeared and then totally disappeared. Maybe it's time to lay low....

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), November 15, 1999.

Solution...hit the submit button...change ONE character and hit submit again...repeat until you force the system to respond...like a good dose of Epsom Salts...

See, FORCING computers to do your will is easy...no Y2K Problem!

-- Z (Z@Z.Z), November 15, 1999.

Lon who?

-- flora (***@__._), November 15, 1999.

All this hassle followed an "upgrade" to the Forum software by a Sysop who knows his trade as well as or better than most. Somehow, the Law of Unintended Consequences comes to mind. Sometimes they bite.

-- Tom Carey (tomcarey@mindspring.com), November 15, 1999.

Z (Z@Z.Z),

Your "solution" will result in multiple postings -- please don't do that.

I mistakenly double-posted in another thread earlier because I was not aware of this problem with delays in posting, and thought the trouble was on my end.

>See, FORCING computers to do your will is easy...

Yep. Every time you press that Submit button, the computer will do your will ... assuming that your will is to add another posting to the thread even if it is almost exactly the same as your preceding posting.

Think we could get the "server too busy" back? At least it worked then...

-- Roland (nottelling@nowhere.com), November 15, 1999.

Lon WHO???

Ah, come on, flora, honey, don't be like that now. I know I been gone awhile, and then that little thing with Diane. Actually, it was just a little hug. Not one a' them belly-to-belly, standing-on-tiptoes types. Just a little hug, really, more like a squeeze, kinda. between friends, uh, you know.

(That thing's not loaded is it?)

-- Lon Frank (lgal@exp.net), November 15, 1999.

This problem has been going on for some time. See----

Humm.

Evening. It seems to be responding faster now. Maybe MIT doesn't DO mornings?

*Sigh*

(A group of us are workin' on the back-up plans).
