Now it's Russia???????????????????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Why don't we start a thread on "Pluto to hit planet earth in Jan." What has happened to this forum today? Did I miss something? If anyone sends their nukes after us it's game over for everybody. Yes a few will survive, most will not. You cannot prepare for a major nuclear war and it's aftermath. Chill! Back to y2k.

Absolutely right Flame, it would be game over for everybody, and everybody knows that, but they prefer to live in fear. The missiles sit in their silos only because everyone is afraid to be the first to throw down their guns.

You may have a hard time selling that on this forum though, because it seems that some Y2K fans are also big nuclear armageddon fans. I don't understand that at all, because they are so completely different. Y2K is based on machines which are going to do what machines do. Nuclear war is based on human beings who can choose what they want to do. BIG difference, though apparently many still don't realize that.

You really don't understand....yes, that much is true. Reasonable people believe as you do...Look around you. How many people on this planet are reasonable? You looked at Iraq lately? Russia's policy has always been that if they could achieve an edge then they would launch. They have put in place shelters, supplies, evacuation plans, etc. They BELIEVE they can survive. Folks that believe that way are not what I call reasonable.

Kearney (nuclear war authority, his book is now on the web), also believes that it is survivable. Now you understand. It doesn't really matter whether YOU believe the world will survive. If somebody out there with the capability to carry out his own nuclear, chemical, biological plans BELIEVES that it will work, then we are all in trouble.

Y2K presents an opportunity for the "nuts" to fall out of the woodwork. By that I mean the ones who would wage a war of mass destruction. Limited or all out exchanges are possible. Probable? I don't know. Many seem to think so. Most don't want to think about it. You will find that reaction to Y2K also. That is why it is discussed on this forum.

Before you castigate those who bring it up, remember others' reactions to your position on Y2K? Now go read up.

THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!! THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!! AHHHHHH They can't feed their own people. Their country is run by the mob. Their economy has collapsed. They got hammered in Afghanistan and are losing in Chechnia. Their navy is mostly rusting in port. They have Moslem insurrections brewing throughout Central Asia.Moslem terrorists are blowing up apartment buildings throughout Russia. They face a dozen Chernobals and a collapsing infrestructure from Y2K.And they're all going to go live in caves and nuke us next month? with the Chinese? Talk about hysterical paranoics. Sorry, Don't buy it!

Maybe Y2K-thinking folks let their concerns brush along the Nuclear issue because Cohen, Hamre, CIA, FBI, DOD, FEMA, .alphabets, .gov, .mil, .system, et al, have been pounding their pulpits non-stop equating Y2K with NBC Terrorism. Their meme must be osmosissing ...

Dear ynott;

I have read all of the news on Russia, not only have I read it, I read it months ago. This IS NOT new news. To make my position clear, I do think it is very possible for some nut case to let some bugs or chemicals loose. As far as the nukes go, as stated above that takes humans to make that call. I FIRMLY beleive, a nuke would be launched only as a last ditch effort to save a country. A suitcase nuke is another story. I won't argue that one, but then again, that is not an all out nuclear war. We did however, come within 15 mins. of one back in the 60's. I was there, and I remember well. That kind of tension, is not around at this point in time. When it is, you will all know. As far as the, use it or loose it theory, I don't buy it!

Right on Flame Away & Ralph. Don't be buying this paranoid BUNK. The Ruskies are in dire straits. They already have their war. Its not just Chechnya, its all of the west Caspian region. They couldn't mount a viable offensive against Mother Teresa's crew. There's enough legit y2k threats without spinning these wild, offbase yarns.

Wow, do I see a glimmer of hope for mankind after all? Looks like 4 out of 6 have chosen not to surrender to fear! After some of these other threads I had started to lose faith in humanity. Don't ever let them kill the human spirit!

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), November 16, 1999.

That is right and not only is Russia in dire straits, but so are alot of other countries....countries that have been buying technology from North Korea, China, and Russia. That is why folks are scared..

As to "You will know"....I'm afraid the country has changed alot since the 60's....I was there too...hid under my desk in florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis...Parents and friends and now hubby all in the military., You really don't understand....There won't be any warning, next time. We , as you so adeptly assessed, are not dealing with civilized countries anymore, that has all changed.

I am not panicked. I am not paranoid. I do not have a bunker. There is absolutely nothing I can do....but be aware...And that is what many folks here are...Unlike Y2K, for which you can predict and prepare, I do not have the ability at this time, nor am I in country, to prepare for a limited or all out nuclear exchange....or chems, or bios...

Just stay informed, don't panic and if you feel it necessary and desirable, prepare for those as well...believe me , they are just as real...unfortunately.

Ynott

We will agree to disagree.

:0)

FLAME AWAY! I can live with that response...in fact it is the most civil response (that disagreed with me) I have received in weeks.

Thank you for that.

Ynott

I always TRY to be civil, sometimes it just doesn't work. :)
