How do I rename the server name for an NT Computer running SQL Server 7 without having to re-install SQL Server afterwards. Because I do not want to loose any database.

The SQL Server Books Online offers this advice:

How to change a servers registration (Enterprise Manager) To change a servers registration:

1. Expand a server group.

2. Right-click a server; then click Edit SQL Server Registration Properties.

3. Change the servers registration as appropriate.

Note, if you change the computer name of the server, you cannot start Microsoft. SQL Server until you run SQL Server Setup. You will be prompted to upgrade, and the necessary SQL Server options will be reset with the new computer name. After youve upgraded, you can exit Setup. Your databases will not be affected by this procedure.
