It's the Poseiden Adventure!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I was just watching the Poseiden Adventure..when it dawned on me just how like Y2K this movie is. It's New Years Eve. You've got a Captain (Leslie Nielson=Clinton)who tries to turn the ship aside instead of facing the giant wave head on, which would have prevented the ship from capsizing.

The wave hits just after the countdown. You've got a Purser, (kosky?) telling everyone to remain calm and stay where they are. You've got a free thinking Preacher (Gene Hackman=Gary North?) who is quite sure everyone needs to climb UP instead of staying where they are. Red Buttons (insert any other doomer here) tries to convince everyone else to go up with them. He finds one person.

And you have a handfull of GI's who make the ascent. After the water starts crashing in on the Pollies who decided to stay put, they panic and climb over each other trying to climb up the Christmas tree. Too Late. The GI's still have a long road ahead of them, and some of them die along the way, but eventually they make it to daylight.

I know it's a corny movie, but it was really a good study of GI's and DGI's, because you know darn well if any of us was on that ship, climbing up would have made perfect sense, and we'd all have been up that tree lickety split. ;-) Okay, now back to your regular programming.

Kritter;

You make way too much sense.

I better go to costco tomorrow.

Actually, The Poseiden Adventure is the story of Christ. It's been years since I've seen it... False prophets, the death of the unbelievers, Lot's wife, looking back, just a little too curious for her own good.. Then there's Mary M in her hot pants and the ultimate sacrifice at the end. I think there was a lost sheep in there somewhere too... Hey, I'm a believer and the Y2K story is interesting. I'm just ready to sit back, smoke a cigar and enjoy it all. Give it a rest.

That was a good movie. With all the various disaster movies since then, you'd think by now the herd would have gotten a clue. Nope.

Well I liked the theme song from the Poseidon Adventure. "There's Got To Be A Morning After." I hope it's true.

When Mad Magazine lampooned the Poseidon Adventure (a movie I liked, BTW) they entitled it: "The Poop-side Down Adventure"....

Non Mad Magazine Lovers need not apply...

Kritter,

Great analogy...

The preacher definitely reminds me of GN. Always focused on survival. Never wavering to uninformed disent. I hope that the body count and carnage with not resemble the ballroom when the water started rushing in. The GI's just looked in shock and grief at the mass that didn't listen...
