One more chicken question for Kristi, Taz & Mad Monk

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I can't believe BH's luck at getting 25 hens out of 26 straight run chicks. I ended up with two hens out of 11, only one of which is laying. The other laid one deformed egg about six weeks ago and that's it. My question is this: can I introduce some more hens into the coop with these two without causing a battle? Which would be better - hens about the same age (7 mos.) or chicks? I know the chicks would have to be separated until they're older, but how old?

Thanks. After all our work on the "hennebago," etc., I'd like to have more than one productive chicken!

We introduced a bunch of new big chickens in with our flock. We put them together at dusk...almost dark. One dead chicken later...now all seem to be okay.

I would put the same size/age hens if I could. Don't know where you live, but getting kinda late in the season for chicks. Ya know the saying, "April chicks, Sept eggs". And would all forgive me if I introduced a joke here re the chicken and the egg?

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is leaning against the headboard smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on its face. The egg, looking a bit pissed off, grabs the sheet and rolls over and says: "Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question!"
