Y2K and You - Fed Gov't Official Handbook;

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Per Koskinen's press meeting on Wednesday, the handbook is out, and can be found at this site:

http://www.y2k.gov/new/y2k_new.pdf

Before I get into what it says, I want to know if anyone has seen this anywhere but at the site. The man said it was supposed to be distributed to the population, but never said how this would be accomplished. There's a number you can call to get 'additional' copies, but I want to know where & when the average person will first have one put into their hands. I mean, the only reason I was able to listen to Mr. K was that I regularly check C-span's web site for info on Y2K hearings, etc.

It was the 10th of November, for crying out loud!

As for the handbook, don't worry, be happy. Plan as you would for any holiday weekend. That recommendation appears many times. Be sure to have enough water (1 gallon per day per person!). What holiday was it when you last stocked up on WATER? What's NORMAL about that advice???

Oh, yeah, and don't bother to get extra cash, not more than any long holiday weekend! (Which holiday would that be, Christmas or President's day? Hmmmmmm....) You'll always be able to use your credit cards or write checks if you need to buy something. I wonder if the Federal Government is going to order merchants to honor credit cards and checks when there is no power to use the register or lines to call & get approvals from the banks. Maybe that's part of the contingency plan?

But even if the people only do the minimum preparing, and follow only the guidelines of this booklet, WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO GET THEM???

I'm going to go take a walk. This stuff makes me crazy.

GRRRRR! >:(

At last you still seem to care. I'm about ready to give-up and contribute to the United Nations (tax write-off), stop going to church, send the kiddies to government school, support Clinton & OJ and watch hours of "sit-comms" each night. Hell, maybe I'll be really fashionable, become a homosexual and start a tax- exempt "association"!

Sigh...

And someone outdid him/herself with the graphics. So it's PDF, which not everyone can handle.

On the bright side, Kosky wants me to stockpile "at least" three days worth of food. I'm proud to say I got THAT covered, you betcha!

Does this describe whats going on here???

As generally understood, propaganda is opinion expressed for the purpose of influencing actions of individuals or groups... Propaganda thus differs fundamentally from scientific analysis. The propagandist tries to "put something across," good or bad. The scientist does not try to put anything across; he devotes his life to the discovery of new facts and principles. The propagandist seldom wants careful scrutiny and criticism; his object is to bring about a specific action. The scientist, on the other hand, is always prepared for and wants the most careful scrutiny and criticism of his facts and ideas. Science flourishes on criticism. Dangerous propaganda crumbles before it.

Koskinen has a pat video and references this website in a presentation that is in the process of being delivered to the various federal agencies.

Question recently heard at one federal agency propaganda session (er meeting): "Well, gentlemen, if our agency has a command center and a contingency plan why shouldn't I have one for my family."

Yes, Virginia, Federal employees don't like being lied to more than anybody else, particularly when it concerns the welfare of their families.

Oh,btw, Kosky tells folks to store three days of water but dosen't suggest any backup heating plan. In DC and points north that could begin to look like three days of ice!

andie, go to www.y2k.gov

there you'll choose either Text Only or Graphics

Whichever you select, you should find a link to the booklet.

Good luck.
