dear urth, Please tell me why Flagyl is nasty stuff. My dr. is going to put my daughter on it. She had giardia 6 yrs. ago and became very sick from cure.I called old pediatrician to find out what the first med he gave her that she had such a bad reaction to. They don't know. She had 2 different meds and only wrote down one. Now I am not sure which one made her so ill.I am picking it up today but very reluctant to give it to her. Thank you in advance. Tress

This site gets a little technical but has the most info in one spot. searlehealthnet.com/pi/flagyl.html

It could be Quinacrine. In the clinic where I worked years ago, we used Flagyl for adults and Quinacrine for the kids. Just make sure that the pharmacist knows her age and weight, regardless of the medication used. They're both very strong, and it's important to get the dosage right. It's been awhile since I've been involved in that area of medicine, so check to see if there's another alternative to these two.

This is the Johns Hopkins website. Go down a ways on the right under Health Resources and click on Drug Resource Center. Search for metronidazole - you'll get a bunch of documents, but just click on the drug name itself and you'll get a bunch of information about the side effects of taking it. But there are some conditions that don't respond well to other antibiotics, so you should talk to your doctor about it.

Good luck!

Be careful with Flagyl that you don't give her anything that might have any alcohol in it. Extracts, chough and cold med, frequently have alcohol in them. Alcohol and Flagyl can make anyone extreamly ill. Otherwise, Flagyl can work wonders.
