Amsterdam mayor to spend New Year's Eve in the basement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - It's his party and he can cry if he wants to. While hundreds of thousands of revelers are partying at a city-sponsored millennium bash, Amsterdam Mayor Schelto Patijn said he would be in a control room beneath city hall to deal with any emergency caused by a millennium computer glitch.

``I won't be there, I'll be in a bunker under city hall,'' Patijn told a news conference unveiling the city's plans.

The city plans a 10-hour concert with Dutch and foreign musicians and will erect a Ferris wheel with giant lights to display the countdown to the millennium.

All the electrical needs of the $475,000 extravaganza will be powered by generators, Patijn said.

I wish I had a basement, you lucky subterranean dwellers.

I also wish I had a basement. At least I am on a septic tank. I have that much going for myself in this. I think the biggest attraction of a basement is to have a place to GET THE STUFF OUT OF SIGHT.

How Brave !!!! I am sure he has told his voters though that there is no need to worry, they will be just fine.

Stanley- I think the fact that they had the forsight to run the celebration on generators says something. I have been to Amsterdam several times and found the people there a delight. Whatever happens I'm sure they'll handle it well, and I wish them well.
