Y2K Conditions In Vermont

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I will be flying into Burlington, Vermont on January 2, 2000. From there I will go to Montpelier, Vermont and spend 11 days. Does anyone have any input as to what I should expect from Y2K in that area? I know it is very cold during January

Thanks,

Big Easy

A lot of cows with sore udders as all the milking machines go out of control.

You might start by saying "I PLAN to fly ..." If it happens that you DO fly into Burlington, then Y2k will not be a huge problem for you in Vermont. That is, the airport staff got to work, the infrastructure works, the ATC system works unless you're VFR, the fuel is available, nobody is scared enough to stay home, and you haven't seen any problems that keep you from going.

If Y2k is a huge problem, then you won't be flying in there, so you don't have to worry about Burlington.

Either way, Burlington is not going to be a problem for you. Don't know what it might be like, for the people living there.

Burlington in January will not be a problem. They have only 2 runways and limited flight in and out. It would be very rare to have two planes landing within 10 minutes of each other. The surrounding area will not be a problem either. The airport is about 3 minutes from the highway and as long as it is not snowing heavy, you should have a smooth ride to your final destination.

Burlington International Airport is so named because they have one flight per day to Montreal. Four gates.

bw,

Yes, I should have used the word "PLAN" since the airports on both ends of my flight, and the one in the middle that provides a transfer, must be up and running.

My main concern is the cold. I was up there last winter and, my god, this southern boy nearly fainted the first time I stepped outdoors at night.

Also, I am concerned about getting home. The post from c4i about travel restrictions put me on alert.

Thanks.

Big Easy, I wouldn't worry about it, you won't be flying anywhere.

yep- it IS cold up here at that time of year- always well sub-zero on New Years eve, without fail. Our pipes always freeze up the last week of December......

but- IF you can fly in, I would imagine things are going o.k.- Montpelier is a terrific place- and the natives are pretty friendly.

But- if stuff is bad- I wouldn't come since you'll be a stranger in a strange land so to speak. Not sure what else you want to know?? Power?? I believe much of it is via Hydro Quebec here- and it goes down frequently anyway. OTOH, if the power goes down, everyone is used to it- for days, even weeks sometimes, and other than the aforementioned sore cows, everyone sorta goes about their business. Many people heat with wood, at least partially. Most people stockpile food for winter. And EVERYONE has a gun- well lots of guns actually. So- it's a pretty safe, polite place!
