OPRAH'S UPCOMING Y2K SHOW

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Oprah has scheduled a Y2K show for November 16. Unfortunately, it has been learned (and I'm sure the Pollies will be thrilled) she has invited Kosky, FEMA, FAA and the standard government spin team to speak. wow, way to add to complacency. this show could have really had potential to help americans not anesthesize them further.

Not that it will do anything at this late date, but she has a web site for input regarding fears, issues, etc. about Y2K. Fellow preppers, if you feel so inclined, it might be good to share your "respectful" opinions with regards to her (and her producers) choices about this show and anything else you feel like sharing.

here is the site: http://oprah.com/show/be_on_the_show/y2k.html#form

I would like to suggest several articles/reports for her to review prior to the show so she at least has a clue.

Suggestions on the best, most comprehensive and "reader friendly"? I doubt she would take the time to wade through most of the Senate reports...

TT-

I was just curious about something: if you think that government sources (John Koskinen, FEMA, FAA) and the other "spin teams" that you refer to will be a useless, misleading, deceptive "pollyanna" presence on the Oprah show, who would you rather see doing the presenting on that show? Do you think someone like Gary North, or Cory Hamasaki, or (leading back toward middle of the road) Ed Yourdon would be more accurate as an information source? I wonder what you'd rather see happen.

I am a fellow "prepper," although in an admittedly optimistic sort of way (wood stove, another cord of wood on the way, extra provisions), but I also have stopped dwelling on this and looked forward to other things in life, like attempting to start a family, my new IT job that starts Monday, working on my house, etc.

If you think that this roster of speakers on the Oprah show is the wrong crew, maybe the likes of Yourdon, Dr. Ed Yardeni, Dick Mills, et al would be a good replacement. Would a debate with opposite parties be better as far as portraying a range of viewpoints? Or do you think that there's only one viewpoint to be subscribed to at this late date, and that any public debate would be misleading also?

This is my real e-mail address, and I will return e-mails. I'd be interested in your response.

Thanks-

Larry,

It would be nice if there was some balance in the show. We all know what Kosky's line will be. I have started a thread asking Ed to consider appearing.

Too bad they eliminated the "draft" :-)

The newsletter from Y2K Women's Karen Anderson received yesterday regarding Oprah's show only said she had asked for referrals of expectant mothers who were due on 1/1/00, to inquire how they were preparing in case there was not medical help. Typical argggghhhh stuff, was my thought on Oprah's selection of approaches to Y2K. If she's having these others on the show, it sounds as if it may be more than that. But they will only give "spin." (She hasn't invited Karen to be on the show, by the way.)

I'm surprised no one has been talking about the 11/4 letter to Greenspan from a gazillion notables. I'm sending Oprah a link to that letter. Here's one for you: http://www.y2knews.com/openletter.htm

Is the OptiFast diet y2k compliant?

Perhaps GN et al from the doomer camp could do an "equal time" kinda thing on Jerry Springer?

I'd love to see GN and CPR scratch and claw at each other for an hour on Springer. Or Milne and Flint, perhaps? KOS mudwrestle Maria?

The entertainment possibilities are myriad. Shame we won't get to see any of it...

At least we've got the next best thing here.

actually that is a hoot of an idea--someone QUICK write to springer and see if you can get a doomer versus polly show together. maybe you could have an audience of lurkers/trolls. mention some of our more colorful posters. at least 90% of the american population would SEE something about Y2K!!!!!!!!

maybe we should even consider south park--another show that targets a whole new segment of the population.
