greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Mr. Way has added immeasureably with his info. and opinions and Q&As. on this forum. I was struck by a simple question and answer way way down on The long thread below.

Q: Thank you for your time. Are you preparing? how?

A: I have stopped saying. I do not want the responsibility.

Can you believe this answer? I could not. Just the fact that he did not say--"three days" implys What?? He does not want the responsibility!! Is this how are government is handling this?? They dont want the friggin responsibility??

God help us one and all!!!

Our Country was founded, developed, formed, fought for, by men and women that wanted to in fact desired to take responsibility for big things, scary things, I hang my head in shame as to what we as a people have become!!

Prepare as though your life depended on it.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Maybe somebody can email him and get this clarified. I mean, it could be either

He doesn't want to influence people to spend their money on stuff they somehow won't need, or

He doesn't want his superiors upset with him for going against the 'storm' scenario.

We have handed over the responsibility for our lives to bureaucrats. We will be sorry.

-- Pearlie Sweetcake (storestuff@home.now), November 11, 1999.

What gives with such needy people seeking someone to tell them to "prepare?" I can see how dictators come into being. All it takes is a population demanding a "leader" tell them what to do and guide all their personal choices in life.

Something is wrong with a few of you.

Paula,

Please understand the question was posed to Mr. Way by someone that was curious what a guy with his credentials would say! After receiving a non answer added with not wanting to take responsibility is probably a good answer to prepare.

Goodness sakes paula--where on earth would you come up with your premise that asking that question borders on acquiescing to Despots???

Just read his posts... he has said what he thinks. That is what he will act upon. It is his RIGHT to remain silent. He is not speaking in the capacity of federal employee... READ. You can figure it out for yourselves.

If he says "Don't prepare" MANY people act on his advice. If he says "Do prepare" MANY people act on his advice. He does not want the responsibility of making decisions for MANY people, seems reasonable to me.

His comments speak for themselves, Mr. Way, "Gets It".

d.b.,

Read his answer again and think about it. To me it has much more content than if he'd given a laundry list of stuff.

Got to agree with Pearlie & Paula on this.

d.b., I am the person who asked the question. if you have the time, could you please tell me where you read this ansure? I'v looked for an hour and can't find it. Thank you, Hatti

d.b, please post the URL of where you saw this statement from Mr. Way. I too have been looking hard and could not find it.

For anyone interested, I went to IEEE website and saw this interesting read:

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
Technical Activities Board

Yea r 2000 Technical Information Statement Release 1.0(PDF)

Any answer he gives on preparation will quickly become cyber folklore. His response was responsible. You can read it either way, so I wouldn't bother trying. You've also got to remember that every single question he answered was addressed toward some aspect of his optimism. I noted that by the end of the discussion, he seemed pretty warn down defending only the optimistic side. I have no doubt he is a GI, he just may not be as much of a doomer as some believe he ought to be.

For some reason his "full response" came up on the original thread. When read in full I think he ansured my question responsibly. Thank you, Mr. Way.

It seems a question on preparing has become moral and political rather than prudent. I didn't mean to step on any toes.

I would like to point out that there are alot of people out there like me. Quietly researching to the best of our abilities and making up our OWN minds. Posting half quotes and assuming the character of an individual, political or otherwise doesn't help. Y2K is not personal, we are all in this.

I will probably go back to lurking now as I have no tech help to offer. To all of you who do have that kind of background and ability to contribute I am most grateful. You have helped me to better understand some very difficult aspects of y2k. Thank you.

To those of you who get to fighting you have made me laugh on many occasions when I wanted to cry. Thank you.

Hatti
