Frontier Airlines to Limit Service Around Y2K

Updated 5:56 PM ET November 10, 1999

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Frontier Airlines Inc. , a Denver-based low fare carrier, said on Wednesday it has canceled about 52 flights for Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 to head off any potential Y2K complications and because of limited consumer demand.

Frontier does not plan to have any planes in the air beyond 9:00 p.m. MST on Dec. 31, and the first flight on Jan. 1, 2000 isn't scheduled to depart before 7:20 a.m. MST, according to the company's quarterly earnings report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Frontier said it has canceled about 34 flights for Dec. 31 and another 18 flights on Jan. 1. Frontier flies an average of 94 flights per day, according to a spokeswoman for the company.

"It's a combination of a lack of interest from consumers and also the need to monitor, as all the airlines are doing, the (Y2K) situation," said Elise Eberwein, the Frontier spokeswoman.

The airline, which operates its hub out of Denver and serves markets including Boston, Orlando, Dallas and Seattle, has spent about $160,000 to implement its Y2K preparation project so far.

The so-called "Y2K bug" could prevent some computers from distinguishing the year 2000 from 1900 because of old shortcuts that recorded the year with only two digits.

Unless fixed, this could disrupt everything from airlines to hospitals to communications systems.

Frontier shares closed up 1/16 to 12-3/4 on Nasdaq.
