Warning Issued By US West - (STATEWIDE) -- US-West is trying to head off a New Year Y-two-K-related problem. Officials say they are afraid everyone will pick up the phone right after midnight, just to see if it's working. But the phone company says that will overload the system. Officials say they will start running an ad to inform customers that if they do get a busy signal early January first, it only means "try your call again later".

I will have logged onto the internet long before then. If it goes down at midnight, it won't mean "try later."

I will pick up the phone at Midnight...absolutely...

You bet.

I'll leave my PC internet connected (dial up) all evening through roll over. If I loose my connection, I'll be picking up the phone every 5 minutes until I tire of it.

personally, i think this is an excuse waiting to be made. "gee, we woulda been fine if they hadn't all picked up the phone." i had no intention of picking up the phone at midnight.

Me three, and be sure to tell all your friends and family to pick up their phone receiver to see if it works on 12/31/99 12:00 p.m. On second thought, because there is a time difference between the east and west coast, I think I'll get on line at 9:00 p.m. and stay on line until after 12:00 p.m. For sure there will be a busy signal at my house.

Yeah. Sounds pretty familiar...

Kind like that...."Leave your money in the bank and it will be fine..."

It isn't TECHNOLOGY, it's the People!!

Just keep saying that...

Remember the phone systems can only handle 20% of all the phones at one time. More than that and its one big busy crashing signal.

Remember, many telecom systems are keyed off GMT/UTC...
Meaning in New York, etc, problems could start at 7 pm...

Hopefully, no one will say anything about everyone opening their refrigerators right at midnight.

-- Nathan (nospam@all.com), November 08, 1999.

(sigh...) Folks, the switches are "tailored" to various central office areas. A switch in the Wall St. area of NYC will be able to handle more concurrent calls than one here in my humble town. Maybe it is 1/8 of the calls, maybe it is 9/10 or higher. BUT as I have said before, dial tone is the telecommunications industries' answer to fractional reserve banking (St. Gary, pray for us!). If EVERYONE picks up the phone, only a few will get dail tone. NOT Y2K, just fact.

This is too funny, Thank you, I needed the laugh, especially the one about us all opening our refrigerators at midnight!
