ARE THE JAN. 2000 SOCIAL SECURITY GOING TO BE MAILED OUT EARLY???greenspun.com : LUSENET : HumptyDumptyY2K : One Thread
Early in 1999 there were statements by the SOCIAL SECURITY that the Jan. 2000 checks were going to be mail in late Dec 1999 (about 26 of Dec). Does anyone know if this is still the case???

I read recently that this was going to be the case. However, December 26 is the day that the IRS traditionally mails out the 1040 forms and booklets to all taxpayers. A couple of days of heavy delivery, and then the new year is upon us... (I hope the post office stays fully functinal...)

Jan SS checks have been mailed out in Dec. for several years, and I would be surprised if this year is handled differently. If memory serves me, they usually pay between Xmas and Jan 1, so they can't be doing it to get holiday money out to payees a bit early. I suspect this long-standing policy may be an attempt to push taxable income from Jan to Dec so the Govt can get their tax bite one year earlier.

If you're going to send out seasonal cards and gifts, the earlier the better. They'll be more likely to actually make it to their destination on time, but also will help to relieve the pressure on the post office for everybody else's last minute mailings and transportation of much needed Y2K supplies.
