Who is Paul Milne and what does this have to do with Y2k

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Folks:

I am out of town and can only check in from time to time. The same attack on Milne has been posted on a lot of boards. Not nearly the same but exactly the same. Now, I am not necessarily a supporter of Milne [I haven't had the time to read much of his stuff]. Yet, I think that this kind of attack violates the spirit of what the boards can do. We should get back to discussing the subject and forget personal attacks. I know that this won't work, but I tried.

Best wishes,,

Z1X4Y7:

Paul is very opinionated and for some reason has angered some people. I'm trying to find out the reasons for this on the "Re Paul Milne" thread below. Please, take a look at it. So far, when the accusations are probed a bit, they've tended to either decompose or turn out to have been something that was taken out of context.

It's just the old game of "If you can't refute the message, shoot the messenger." There's a lot on here you just have to ignore.

The trolls will attack anyone who doesn't agree with them -- especially if that person disagrees with them as strongly as Paul Milne does.

I am not involved in that discussion, but I believe they are discussing the meaning of compassion from many different viewpoints. They can discuss whatever they like, so mind your own beeswax. If you don't like that discussion, why don't you just come up with a new one of your own? I'm ready... got anything interesting?

Yea Hawk:

I have this one. Tell me how you discuss compassion from many different view points. From my limited reading, Paul would label you a moron. This may have started part of the problem. But I guess that you don't want to help solve it.

Best wishes,,,,,

Z1X4Y7,

Don't even bother trying to discuss anything with Hawk. He's a hotheaded know-it-all.

Best wishes.

ZIX4Y7,

Everyone has a different idea about what compassion is, and they are sharing and debating these ideas. So what's the big problem, you've never heard a debate? I would tell you to go see for yourself, but you already said you're not interested.

Why get so hungup about that post? It's a free world, you can bring up any kind of discussion you desire, and by the way, don't let yourself be limited to Y2K, we discuss lots of interesting things. I think maybe you are just looking for something to complain about.

I wonder why anyone attcks Paul Milne, or even bothers to respond to him. He is an electrician and part time pig-farmer. He has done NO y2k remediation, and doesn't program computers.

Its like attacking your hair dresser for not knowing about foreign oil markets....

I 'attacked' Mad Milne because irrespective of the correctness or otherwise of his views on Y2K, if we all thought like him, we might as well live in the jungle, and act like animals.

(And before you flame away, yes, there are plenty of 'human animals', but it's the rest of us that counter them and make for a semblance of civilisation. If we sink to their level - like Mad Milne - we're lost.)

-- ASking (Asking@a quesrtion.com), November 08, 1999.

Lighting Up: Just because Milne is not a manicured yuppie or a computer geek means his opinions are not valid?? He seems to me to have a much firmer grasp on reality than 99%+ of the population.

The reason he attracts such flaming is that he does not sugarcoat his opinions. His detractors are the same psychologicaltype who would get upset at someone saying "shit", but it would be OK to say "excrement" or "number 2". A is A, but many, if not most, can't accept the truth in a forthright fashion (or in any fashion, for that matter).

Z1X4Y7:

You see, almost on cue, already one of the attackers ("Asking") has shown up here and demonstrated my observation perfecty!

"Asking" presents us with what? An attack with no substance, of course!

Thanks, "Asking", for supplementing my point with a wonderful real-life example.

The attacks on Milne are not warrented. Many families do not get along very well anyway. Without knowing all of the facts, how can we judge Milne? I can easily understand why someone would not give food to family members, especially if the person had been ridiculed by these people for preparing.

..so sayeth the mini-Milne...

-- Y2K pro (y2kpro1@hotmail.com), November 08, 1999.

To asking........ I'll side with Paul Milne given the circumstances he's explained. And you~ will you welcome everyone with open arms at the risk of your very family going hungry? Knowing what you have in you pantry will supply a few a while. A houseful for a weekend at best. Pray that you don't have to make these decisions. We are all fat with lifes conviences, and it is easy to pass judgement now.

I noticed on a related thread where someone made a link between a mention of the DGI's in question being scornful and revenge on the part of the GI in the form of denial of sustenance. I got the impression that the scorn was mentioned to show the strength of the derision, not as justification for some sort of vengeance.

Whenever there's a discussion about Milne I sense TONS of genuine fear just below the surface. People are terrified that he's right. It far surpasses their mere dislike of him as an abrasive person.

If you knew for a fact that Milne was wrong about everything (& no one does), there would be no reason to get worked up over his rants. Fear is what gives these discussions their edge.

In two months or so we'll know who's right & who's wrong. Why waste energy getting angry now?
