Heirloom Seeds

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I'm a newbie to gardening, and am considering buying garden seeds from Heirloom Seeds (on line). Does anyone have any personal experience with their products? Did the plants grow well? (A few years ago I bought flower bulbs from the Michigan Bulb Company & ended up with very poor quality bulbs. I'd not like to repeat that experience...)

Thank you!

Deb, there are sources for, and comments on, a number of seed companies at this thread:

None specifically critique Heirloom Seeds, but I'm sure someone else on the forum will have some experience.

With regards to your experience with Michigan Bulb - they are uniquetly reknown for their lousy service and low quality merchandise.

Others have had problems with Blum's.

Search at under "heirloom" and you'll come to a bunch of threads with comments.

If you are looking for heirloom vegetables, Burpee's has an entire catalog devoted to them. Check out the other major catalogs as well, like Park's, Thompson & Morgan. Any vegetable that is a hybrid must be listed as such, so if the word 'hybrid' doesn't appear in the description it is a veggie that will come true from seed for generations. I have been happy with orders from all 3 of these companies. You might also want to check out gardenweb.com, they have tons of gardening links and great information.

Territorial Seeds in Oregon is good. Quick service too.

Stay away from Richter's in Ontario, Canada. Half my order was not in stock with promise to ship next season (yeh right!) and it took about 6 months to get my money back from them. Two of their plants that arrived were almost dead and never made it. Their catalogue is, however, very informative and interesting. I learned a lot from it. They are also very slow to answer e-mail and seemed to pass my inquireries to get my money back from one department to another.

Only buy non-hybred seeds. Call the company and ask what their codes mean if it isn't stated in the catalogue.
