HAVE WE GOT A HACKER, HEAVY HANDED CENSOR, Y2K PROBLEMS OR WHAT?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I watched this morning as a reply to a post was not added, then added, then deleted, then added again, then deleted again....

Could somebody please explain what is going on? Mine was not the only reply to be expunged and in none of the cases was there any foul language or notable reason for erasure.....Hmmmmmmmm?

Phil made some adjustments that are now causing these posts to go beserk. He eliminated the "server busy" problem, and I haven't seen it all day, but now it is doing weird things like you said. The posts keep disappearing and reverting to an earlier cached version, and then it comes back after a while.

Thanks Hawk. I am somewhat relieved. After what happened to Michael Hyatt's site, I was growing concerned. Hope he gets it all fixed up soon....us too..

Yes. I had something like that happen to me on How to Handle Forum Traffic on 12-31-99 Eve. I added a message, then after viewing the Success announcement, backspaced twice and hit reload button. The post was not there. I waited 10-15 seconds and checked again. It was there. A few moments ago I revisited the thread and it was gone.

In this post I offered up the IRC channel #TimeBomb2000 on Efnet as a place that would handle nearly unlimited number of visitors. The bandwidth is not as good, seeing as how it has only one "thread," but it is real time.

What was yours about Ynott?

Automatic Garbage Disposal.

Dancr, Thanks for the concern. It wasn't really an important reply and it has since reappeared. I was just concerned by the disappearing/reappearing act and thought we had "gremlins" in the system. Glad to know that isn't so. I am MUCH relieved.

Sounds like caching problems... possibly a 'squid' program or something like that between you and the server ... just a guess.

There are a lot of nets running caching web servers on their nets these days. If you are using a proxy to access the web you can see things like this from time to time.

If someone was intentionally causing problems, I suppose they could cache the real server and then spoof a name server so that you hit their cache. I don't see anything to support this theory on my end.

It is pure speculation on my part.

Just plain problems. Although, I suppose I really couldn't blame them for deleting my suggestion of providing Koskinen with a 3 day supply of beans by shoving President Pecker's Y2K bug Beanie Baby collection up his ass.

(this was a test. It was only a test. Had this been a real delete, I would have been notified. Thank you)

Say you are kidding. Does Clintdong really have a beanie baby collection?

Phil Greenspun's been working on the software. Give it a couple days. There seems to be a delay factor between posting and seeing the post.

The reload capability isn't working for me. Have to go out of a thread then back in, after a minute or so, to see the new posts.

It is funky. I posted to the ES 9000 thread, and it showed up about a minute later. But when I went back to that thread about 10 min later, it was gone, even after a refresh. I went back again, it was gone, but it did show up after a refresh this time! Very strange... <:)=

Good practice for Y2K, to be sure. Will be especially interesting when this sort of thing happens to electronic funds....

LOL KOS!!!

"HEEEEEYYY!!! I just deposited $3,000 through my ATM! Where did it go??"

There are going to be some people trippin out big-time next year. ROFLMAO!

...to which the cute little blonde bank teller will respond..

"Oooh, don't worry, it's kinda like there, but not there, ya know what I mean, tee heee hee, no really, it is in your account... I think, no don't worry, it will show up later. Just come back later and let us know if it doesn't, okay? tee hee hee."

'a': Plenty. I'm about to give the State of Kansas one helluva fight about homeschooling my nine year old. The special ed dept seems to think he 'belongs' to them. Imagine that. Maybe they're upset that they haven't had the opportunity to teach him that oral sex is an alternative to intercourse. They're in for a treat dealin' with ME! I guess I need to be an attorney in order to homeschool. You need one to choose your long-distance carrier or to buy an insurance policy. Hell, I'm surprised I didn't need to retain an attorney to redecorate our living room!

Yes indeed. The president of the United States actually had the brass nards to announce IN PUBLIC that he keeps several Y2K 'bugs' around the Whitehouse to remind him that they won't allow this to become an issue (ya right, and I refuse to let it rain this weekend too. I just won't let it happen). He claimed they were "Beannie Baby-like". What an ass-hole.

Ynott, Sysman, et all. I've noticed similar. Sometimes takes a while for a supposedly received post to appear, then it might disappear, then appear again, on a thread.

"HEEEEEYYY!!! I just deposited $3,000 through my ATM! Where did it go??"

*** "I'm sorry, we don't show any record of that deposit. May I see the transaction receipt you got from the ATM?"

"Receipt? It didn't give me any receipt!"

*** "I'm sorry, sir, but unless you can substantiate the existence of the deposit, there's not much we can do."

Yes, it does seem to have lessened the "Server busy" messages. This is a good thing.

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), November 05, 1999.

Sysman,

That is just a new "enhanced feature" of the software. You'll also note that the counter feature is enhanced as well, in that it now updates well after the fact of a post.

Perhaps Mr. Greenspun wanted to illustrate the y2k effect for us.

LOL SOB!

But it does serve as a good example of unexpected results when one makes a program change. This forum was "rock solid" before the change (except busy), now we've got problems. And this is a simple text/database application.

It does look like some sort of "cache" problem. I'm sure Mr. Greenspun is aware of it. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to fix!

Tick... Tock... <:00=

Will Continue, good for you on the homeschooling! If you have problems with the "gov. guys"....join HSLDF...I think that is the acronym...You pay a modest fee and they will go to bat for you in any state at any time. Most homeschoolers join this organization. I haven't thus far as I am overseas. I have heard excellent things about them both from folks here though (they used them back in the states) and from the net.

Just wanted to help. It's the Home School Legal Defense Fund...or something like that.

-- Ynott (Ynott@incorruptible.com), November 05, 1999.

Thanks Ynott. I'm already on it!!!!! Thanks also to those who have privately e-mailed me with their support and suggestions. I'm so tired of left-wing beaurocrats insisting they know what's best for our children. They *claim* to support 'the children' and then create an environment where children have NO rights at all and are treated like 'property'. No better than a car with a title.

We've been tolerating it for the past 19 years where our two oldest children are concerned, but..........NOW they're messing with my baby! We're older, wiser, and far more willing to take a stand.

I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it any more.

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), November 05, 1999.

Will Continue,

You have my wholehearted support. I have been homeschooling for four years now. I'm an ex teacher, ex engineer, and this is the best job I ever had!

If you ever get crazy, and you will, just give a shout and I'm sure that MANY of us homeschoolers will come to your aid.

Never second guess yourself as a parent in this regard. Nobody knows your kid or loves him/her like you do.

If you need help with the curriculum, just holler too... I highly recommend the Saxon math curriculum.
