Property tax assessment on motor vehicles

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

Discussion today @ Factoria's Dept. of licensing: they told me a new car I just purchased from California would be assessed a property tax of approximately 6% when I licensed the vehicle in January. This would be substantially more than the normal license fee. The clerk assured me this was the law. Is it true? I can't believe the state has already set this plan in motion. If its true it looks like another initiative is in order

The person at the Factoria DOL is simply wrong.

All property taxes are capped. This means that if they applied property tax to vehicles, they would not raise extra revenue. It's as simple as that.

People haven't figured out that I-695 doesn't apply to penalties levied for violations of laws. I'd love to see $5000 fines handed out for carpool lane violations. We'd make up the revenue difference in a single day.

"YOU SHOULD WORRY YOUR JOB COULD GET CUT, JUST LIKE SEVERAL OTHERS WILL AND THEN YOUR FAMILY CAN TRY AND MAKE ENDS MEET. " Gee Mike. Unemployment just hit a thirty year low. If you can't find a job in the private sector now, when could you?
