scary sound--a chimney fire. we did alot of wood heating up in NH with a defiant. what a monster. bought it used and sold it for more than we bought it for. good company. good brand. the only problem it had is that occasionally the thing (can't remember the name of it) that automatically controlled the level of oxygen to the fire on the back of the stove would open up (all by itself) and the stove would just roar. too much heat for the lathe in those old houses. they can ignite at a pretty low temp.

the same advice applies to fireplace chimneys. If you plan to use the fireplace in place of or supplement to other heating (I live in CA where it is mild), be sure that you have the chimney cleaned before the new year. Creosote builds up there, too.
