greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

I'll be sure to show my appreciation for all your hard work the next time I'm in Mulkiteo. Perhaps by causing a traffic jam, or handing you a letter from the family of someone who couldn't get police/fire/medical services in time, or by handing you a bill for all the construction projects left unfinished, etc.

Or maybe there should be another initiative requiring that if a *future* initiative explicitly cuts funding from one source, it must also outline what other funding source or cut will be made to compensate. Just like real people do with their own budgets every day.

It may amuse, inspire or satisfy you to shrug on state-wide TV and grin and say "Well, Gov. Locke will just have to sit down and write up a new budget". You have the air of someone who knows they got away with something. You created a legislative and fiscal nightmare. Stop being so smug.

I am amazed at the speed of which all the ememgency services have been cut! Apparently we now have no police, fire or medical services! Wow!And everyone walked off construction jobs! I didn't realize I-695 was such a powerful initiative. I think the government will do just fine learning to live with a new budget. After all, we, the people, have been tightening our belt for years. Hopefully the politicians will take heed from the passage of I695, and realize that WE, THE PEOPLE are the rightful Masters of Government, and when the populace gets fed up, the people will flex their muscles and say "NO MORE"!

And you need to stop whining, Jeff.

I know that democracy doesn't play well in your world... but it does in ours. The people have spoken... so get over it, and move on. Act like an adult for once.

Dear foobar, or is it "FUBAR",

If any of your predictions in you first paragraph come true there is only one group responsible... The Legislature! If they are unable to cut away the 100's of millions of dollars of pork and non- essential spending and focus the already oppressive amount of money they take from my family and me to solve the important issues, they should all be thrown out of office.

In regards to your second paragraph where you reference what real people do with their own budgets, I partially agree with you. Let me give you an idea of what real people do when the amount of money they have to spend in decreased. Let's say I-695 didn't pass and as usual the government increases my taxes thus giving me less money (MY MONEY!) to spend on my family. I would then have to reallocate funds from other parts of my budget to "compensate" the really vital services my family needs. That 40" TV I wanted to buy - GONE, those new skis I was looking at - Gone, that weekend my wife and I were going to take at the ocean - postponed. My other option, rather than doing without the no-essentials, is to get a second job or to have my wife work. So unless Gary Locke and Ron Sims want to do yard work for me on the weekends to get some "Extra" spending money, they are going to have to make the tough decisions their offices require.

In closing, please don't confuse being smug with the uncontainable joy of being able to keep more of ones own money.

King County Voted NO- A recommendation: Take the transit bus to the Amtrak station (303 South Jackson). Take a 751,753,755, or 11 train (actually, most of these aren't trains. They are buses hooking up with a northbound train from further south). In a mere 3 hours and 2 minutes you too can be in the Socialist Republic of Beautiful British Columbia. You'll be MUCH happier! WE'LL be MUCH happier. It's a win-win situation for EVERYONE.
