Just heard on the radio 6.9 - maybe next time Taiwan will just sink into the ocean!

True. The local news carried it like a breaking news piece, but now pushed it back in mag. and severity.

Saw the quake sheet and its a 6.1

Gotta love the local media. Anything to get you to keep watching.

Actually, it is NOT off-topic!!

I fix tv's for a living. Where do you think all of those "chips" needed to build or (here it comes) remediate these systems come from? IBM, Dell, Gateway and others are already experiencing rising costs for replacements. Now comes hit #2!

THe labs these chips are made in are "clean" areas. That means NO DUST. They must be checked out, resterilized, etc. before production can begin again. Now it is back to square one for most of them.

The thing that scares me is that many of these firms may try to "pass off" possibly contaminated chips as "A-OK". Then the REAL fun will begin. (Not that I think it will be FUN or anything.....)

YIKES!

Strong Earthquake Hits Offshore Taiwan

TAIPEI (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of eastern Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean early Tuesday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

State radio, quoting government seismologists, said the strongest magnitude on Taiwan Island itself was in Hualien, a seismically active area on the eastern shore. In the capital Taipei, the quake jarred residents from their sleep and set off car alarms.

The quake provided another reminder of the major earthquake on Sept. 21, in which 2,405 people died across the island and which caused an estimated $14 billion in damage.

Some 254 people were killed on Oct. 22 after a tremor measuring 6.4 on the open-ended Richter scale centered near the south-central city of Chiayi.

That quake measured 7.4 on the open-ended Richter scale.
