FRL # 11 - Lessons from the Geese

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Lessons from the Geese was written by someone named Angeles Arrien. I think you will agree that this person exemplifies the FRLian Spirit in all of us.

Lessons from the Geese

This Fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in "V" formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way.

FACT: As each bird flaps it's wings, it creates an "uplift" for the bird immediately following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock has at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on it's own. LESSON: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

FACT: When a goose flies out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. It quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front of it.

LESSON: If we have as much common sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others. It is harder to do something alone than together.

FACT: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation, and another goose flies to the point position.

LESSON: It is sensible to take turns doing the hard and demanding tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent of each others skills, capabilities, and unique arrangements of gifts, talents, or resources.

FACT: The geese flying in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

LESSON: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek. We need to make sure our honking is encouraging and not discouraging.

FACT: When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two other geese will drop out of formation with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their flock.

LESSON: If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by our colleagues and each other in difficult times as well as in good!

This is the time of the year when the grey sand hill cranes leave Canada and the upper plains area and come south. Have you ever watched them? They fly like geese that have had Zoobie's brain surgery! They remind me of us(to paraphrase the cartoon character). They circle and wheel and circle and wheel and eventually get where they want to go but without the same finesse as geese.Wonder if you could cross a goose with a crane? Nah! You probably get a group of birds that fly a perfect V in circles(ever decreasing) Honk!

-- Neil G.Lewis (pnglewis1@yahoo.com), October 31, 1999.

A couple of years ago, I lost my youngest son. He so loved the beach that his mother and I decided to spread his ashes on a stretch of isolated sand and water that I frequented with my family as child. At daybreak, which was his favorite time at the ocean, the family gathered and my wife and I spread his ashes in the foamy surf. It was a cold, windy, and overcast day. Immediately upon completing our final act, the sun broke the horizon and burned through the dreariness of the day and gave us hope that his spirit was aware of our love.

I recently had the following lines pop into my head.

A child is born And one tragically dies His relection sought out in a cold ocean sky.

A circle of joy and a circle of grief delicately touching, endlessly linked.

* * * * * * *

It is the picture of irony that a place which gave me so much joy as a child, would also be my son's final resting place.

-- MoVe Immediate (MVI@yepimhere.com), October 31, 1999.

Well, do it right MVI or not at all.

A child is born

And one tragically dies

His reflection sought out in a gray ocean sky.

A circle of Joy

And a circle of grief

Delicately touching, endlessly linked.

-- MoVe Immediate (MVI@yepimhere.com), October 31, 1999.

MVI: What you posted is one of the most touching things I have read. There are many ironies in life, and we must take whatever comfort there is for us to take. I have found that there are many times we find comfort where and when we least expect.

Be well.

-- (sonofdust@lessons.learned), October 31, 1999.

MVI: Don't know if you saw this older thread. It seems particularly appropriate here. Pleasant Company

-- Rob (sonofdust@lessons.learned), October 31, 1999.

Thanks for sharing MVI. On the subject of geese, I will share with you the mental image that my grandpa fixed in my mind as a child.

He always said that the hummingbirds went south each fall by riding on the backs of the geese that went by. I love the image!! Every single person that I tell that "tale" to smiles-very broadly. I love it- hope you are smiling too.

-- jeanne (jeanne@hurry.now), October 31, 1999.

MVI, thank you for a beautiful gift! Brightened a difficult day for me.We need to become aware of all the the good things in this old world, and not let the bad things drag our spirits down. Thanks from Canada.

-- Eleanore Mameli (eleanore@island.net`), October 31, 1999.

Thanks to all for the kind words and to Rob for sharing his vision of the sunrise. I have more lines inside me. Maybe some day they will surface, and I will finish it. Or perhaps there is nothing left to be said.

-- MoVe Immediate (MVI@yepimhere.com), October 31, 1999.

MVI....what an incredible synchronicity to find your post about your son....In April of 1998 my sister's 12 year old son, Billy, was killed by a car in front of their house. When the time was right, they took his ashes to Lake Michigan, to the beach.

Thank you for sharing this. My heart to yours....

Now for some FRLian housekeeping (or FRLkeeping).

First, thanks to S.O.B. for his official count just posted on FRL 10 which was 164 answers. The Grand Total for threads 1 8 was 1,606 responses, and FRL #9 had 129. So 1,606 Plus 164 Plus 129 = uh, well, a Lot!!!! :)

For anyone who is not familiar with the FRL, here is a bit of front, or side, or back ground:

We are the Fruitcake Resistance League (FRL) - People who post to this thread are FRLians.

We protect our Freedoms whenever and wherever and whyever and however we must against the evil enema known as the Fruitcake Reserve Bored (The Bored) and their insidious plots - the most famous one was called "Know Your Fruitcake". The FRL was detrimental in de-feeting, or dis-arming, or stopping this wicked proposal from becoming realty.

We also like to write limericks, haikus and other poetry, and sometimes we get just a bit silly in a mostly futile attempt to stay sane (relatively).

So welcome all FRLians, Lurkers, Posters, and especially future FRLians. Feel free to join us in our activities.

-- (sonofdust@FRL.eleven), October 31, 1999.

Beautiful expression for your son, MoVe Immediate.

My Dad's ashes are scattered in Monterey Bay... he loved to sail. My mother wrote a poem for him, that I'll try to find later.

I just received the most wonderful Fruitcake recipe! Now I know that you will all want to try it, so here it is!

1 cup water 1 cup butter 1 cup sugar 4 large eggs 2 cups dried fruit 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup brown sugar 2 cups of flour 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 cup chopped nuts 1 gallon wine Sample the wine to check for quality. Take a large bowl. Check the wine again to make sure that it is of the highest quality. Pour 1 level cup and drink. Repeat if you're not sure. Turn on the electric mixer and beat 1 cup of butter in a large bowl. Add 1 tsp sugar and beat again. Make sure the wine is still okay. Cry another tup. Turn off the mixer. Break two legs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the wine again to check for tonsisticity. Next sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Who cares. Check the wine. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add 1 table. Spoon. Of sugar or flour or something. Whatever you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake pan to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw one bowl out the window. Check the wine again. Go to bed. Who the heck likes fruitcake anyway?

-- J (jart5@bellsouth.net), October 31, 1999.

Drat that format! Or was it the wine........?

-- J (jart5@bellsouth.net), October 31, 1999.

jart5: You an Ol' Git must have gone to the same cooking school! LOL. Thanks. Actually, we FRLians have used fruitcakes in a number of new and interesting ways. Gayla, for example, has taken Fruitcake Weaponry to new levels. We arm our stealth geese regiments with them too. Speaking of witch...

Field Marshalls Tricia, Ashton, Leska, S.O.Bob, and Commander Greybear: This is an official request for the lastest status as to our stealth feathered assets. Please report soonest.

halloween this year
last year I kept the light off
it's a better year

blessings in the griefs
and the uni-verse sings on
so enough for now

Rob,..thank you for posting about information about 'our' geese. Anyone know about the long-term studies done by biologist Lorenz, who was imprinted upon by a newly hatched group of geese and became the parent? Then there was the lovely Disney film on the family who also were imprinted upon by baby geese, and taught them to fly and migrate using an ultra-light plane? Who's on point? :-)

-- Donna (moment@pacbell.net), October 31, 1999.

I remember watching that Disney movie - the whole family enjoyed it, and what is really weird is that somehow or other it came up in conversation this morning while we were eating breakfast. Just another sync, eh Donna?

Oh well, its 'lights out' time. BFN, Rob

-- (sonofdust@lights.out), October 31, 1999.

Well, no geese since my last report, and we had (more) snow today, it seems likely that all geese, both stealth and regular, have left now. I hope they do well on their journey down to Robert land.

-- Tricia the Canuck (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), October 31, 1999.

Speaking of geese, do you know about the "Sacred Geese" of Rome. They alerted the Roman legions to the Barbarians at the gates when the dogs failed to bark. As a result, Rome was saved and the geese were revered for the role that they played in helping to save Rome.

Perhaps "Sacred Geese" is a more appropriate way to refer to those who are trying to wake people up, more appropriate than calling them "Chicken Littles" or "Doomers".

-- abc (abc@abc.cum), November 01, 1999.

Lest this has not been flacked to death on the preparations forums you have read...geese, chickens and other guinea fowl are as good as, or better, watchdogs than dogs....they will not tolerate intrusions into their space without LOUD LOUD LOUD vocalizations. We visit the three geese down the street from us weekly...(the owners also have 8 cats, who don't go near the geese)...they hollar like hell!....

You want an alarm that gives eggs...get chickens and geese....

-- Donna (moment@pacbell.net), November 01, 1999.

Meant to say: Yes,...abc...nice reference to "sacred geese"....

And I'm going to ask the upper eschelon of FRL to think about approving a secret password for when we are out in the world....my recommendation: "Who's on point?" (reference of course to the V of the Stealth Geese...) Just need a response, for like on a watch...

Who's on point?

-- Donna (moment@pacbell.net), November 01, 1999.

Rob, what an excellent new thread! Even if I never read anything else on the forum, I would still come here. As I said before, I LOVE this place! (((((FRLians))))) :-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 01, 1999.

When you see those big V formations of geese, ever notice that one leg of the V is invariably longer then the other?

Ever wonder why?

There are more geese in the long side.

Couldn't resist.

-- Sam (Gunmkr52@aol.com), November 01, 1999.

I echo Brian's sentiments. MVI, that was very moving, thanks for sharing.

Rob Sir, I read your "Pleasant Company" thread which I had missed, which lead me to "New to Y2K?..." thread which I missed also. I needed that, thanks. You are one fine goosy specimen, sir.

There's another characteristic of geese to add to your "lesson learned from geese", which I think is appropriate here also:

Will Canada Geese accept others who are dIfFeReNt? Find the answer here

-- Chris (#$%^&@pond.com), November 01, 1999.

Chris, LOL! A DiETeR version of geese! Speaking of DiETeR, he showed up on the chat board last night when the conversation turned to scrotums... don't ask! :-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 01, 1999.

MVI, you have my full sympathy at the loss of your son. Thanks for sharing your beautiful poem with us, showing us that even in grief there can be beauty. It's something we'll need to remember.

Jeanne, what a lovely image you've preserved from your childhood. Did you pass it to the next generation?

abc, I like the sacred geese reference. I just think that we at the FRL are a wee bit off the wall for anyone to call us sacred :-) Goose is likely though.

Gayla, LOL. I bet you're back there again now, too, aren't you? I could scarce believe my eyes when I saw you and Donna here before me this morning :-D

Donna, is the answer to be "What's his name on the end"?

Chris, your suggestion to wiggle the cable is working for now - but it has worked and then not worked in the past.

Speaking of working -

Donna: Secret password huh? How about using the name of our dear and departed groundhog, the undercover one lost earlier in FRLian history (our only fatality). This would honor his memory as well as to serve as a password. Sound reasonable?

Chris: Thanks for that link. You always can be counted on for finding way cool things!

Now. What is all this about chats? I guess only being on the forum for about 4 hours total all of last month had its price. Sheesh. Is there a new chat that BigDog is running?

Be back tonight (hopefully). BFN, Rob

p.s. Hi Tricia!!!!

Rob, a couple of weekends ago, the forum was down almost 4 hours for maintenance or something. Bok0non started a chat room as a place to go when you couldn't get in here. It's a wild and crazy place at night. (Pretty quiet during the day, I think.) Even Stan was in there last night. (Covering his eyes from time to time when the conversation got a little R rated.) :-) I think some people just bring popcorn and watch... they don't ever post anything and choose to stay anonymous. Check it out some evening:

Rob, you are right about the chat room! LOL! It's crazy to try and have a conversation in there! It's really entertaining, though, to get a glimpse of some Yourdonite personalities. Uncle Deedah keeps us all ROTFL with his antics! Last night he was a leather bunny. :-) Michael Taylor was in there, too, last night. It is SO sweet when he says, "Be right back, my son wants to go find the cat..." or something similar. I can tell he loves his son VERY much!

Tricia, I would NEVER desert this place! It's my favorite of all! :-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 03, 1999.

Gayla, you may think it's cute but my cat is terrified : )

MVI, thanks for such a moving tribute to the living memory of your son.

My father died when I was too young to know him as anything other than daddy. I wrote a melody in tribute to him a few years later and the lyric seemed to follow along without any effort. It is told from his perspective at the time of his death and I'm 100% sure that he helped me write it. I play the melody for people but I've never shared the lyric with anyone except my own son when he was a baby. I'm not really sure why.

I can share the first verse of Mitchell's song...

"I grew up

in a fairy tale world,

full of dragons to slay

and a princess or two.

Where time of day

just meant time to play

and cookies were always

on the menu..."

I could always change "cookies" to Fruitcakes : )

As for you FRLians, I love you all. I know in my heart I am one of you and a better person because of it.

Long Live the FRL and long live you all!!!!

Mike

Lapful of warm purrs

Fuzzy face thrusting into mine

"Why won't you pet me?"

.

I saw the geese last week

Vee-ing south and honking hope

I'd like to join them now

Fleeing cold and snow

Yet I am warm here

And tied with cords of love and duty

Accepting them joyfully

I will stay.

.

As I start my fifth decade,

I wonder, will the next 5 be as kind

Or have I squandered all the best

In scrambling to achieve goals which now

Have lost their glitter.

Still, not all is wasted

I have grown in spirit

And, hopefully, wisdom.

Perhaps the best *is* yet to come.

.

(((FRLians))), you make this my favorite place to be, too.

Howdy! I love the poetry...

Little furry feet

scratching at my door

"let me in!, let me in!"

Now sitting in the sunlit window

with warm, furry bodies

as I stack my cans of food, together.

GO GEESE!!! :-)

Well well. I pop in for my usual 5 minutes and what do I see? MT has joined us with a wonderful post. Welcome Michael! After following and enjoying your fine posts over the last year I can truly say it gives me great pleasure to extend an Official FRLian welcome to you Sir.

And we also have heard from Deb. Welcome newest FRLian, and thank you for the post! Looking forward to some poetry from you :)

And now, it seems that one of our very Dearest and most Loyal FRLians, Field Marshall (and Princess) Tricia, has started her fifth decade. A very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you Tricia! You helped to make the FRL what it has become, and that is very becoming. ((((TRICIA)))))

Ms. Tricia,

Happy birthday, Fair Princess of the Great White North, and Keeper of the True Stealth Geese.

May all of the dreams and fairy tale wishes of your earlier years become the facts and truths of all of your tomorrows.

Looking forward to seeing your geese upon their return to my backyard.

In your honor, this must , of course, be post #50.

To one and all, just to say Hi, and Welcome to all of the new members.

Welcome to the place where you can abandon all cares and worries, where naught but laughter and frivolity can prevail. Here the Big Bad Wolf is banished.

These people are nuts, they are real fruitcakes. Stick around and you'll see.

Happy birthday Tricia. Let's party! Here is a little bubbly.

-- (secret@dmirer.ofTricia), November 04, 1999.

My apologies, oh great and wondrous leader, my birthday is next week Friday - it's just the angst that starts this week ;-) And of course starting my fifth decade makes me 41 on it (the first decade being from 1-10), so I was being a bit dramatic. Or does that mean that I started my fifth decade last year since you don't turn 1 until you've lived a year already? Now I'm confused. Which is good, it's a state I'm well familiar with :-)

And now for something completely different:

"Something I Have Learned While Preparing"

One of my rediscovered skills is knitting. Now I have crocheted all along, but kinda let knitting go by the wayside. So when I found a really nice pattern for a sweater, I decided it would suit my purposes well. I got the wool and the needles and began. With our older cats being quite happy to just sit by me, regardless of what odd things I might be doing, I thought nothing of the small cat coming to visit while I was knitting a few days later. Until he snatched the knitting from my hands and ran off with it like a trophy in his mouth, dropping stitches as he went. Argh! Yarn everywhere, needle clanging and my precious knitting rapidly being reduced to an ever lengthening snarl of wool. So the moral of my tale is, cats are wonderful beasts who belong OUTSIDE when knitting up a storm. (BTW, I caught him before he ruined it all - and made small daughter rethread what stitches remained, it's her cat after all).

.

Small black cat chases

Anything that moves in view

Urban terrorist!

.

Monitor on the fritz again, and I work later tonight - see y'all tomorrow if I can.

Hi Donna. Thanks for that link about Operation Migration. It made me appreciate the movie even more. And I second the emotion for a week-long party for Tricia. She deserts it.

Ms. Tricia,

>My apologies, oh great and wondrous leader, my birthday is next week Friday - it's just the angst that starts this week ;-) And of course starting my fifth decade makes me 41 on it (the first decade being from 1-10), so I was being a bit dramatic.<

Since you have, by your own admission, been overly dramatic in refering to the upcoming event of November 12th instant, I find that I have no choice but to hereby take away two (2) of your birthdays.

You may keep, and use at your convenience, all greetings and salutations thus far received. You will retain your title of Fair Princess of the Great White North, and Keeper of the True Stealth Geese. You are, however, banned from any further aging until the Year of our Lord 2009.

Please adjust your age counter as required to reflect your new age.

This is #54

Mike, I didn't think about your poor cat!

Deb, good to see you here. Welcome!

Rob, thanks for the smile! I needed one today! :-)

I third the emotion that we should celebrate Tricia's birthday for a week. I could use a party! Especially if I can have that waltz with S.O.Bob...

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 04, 1999.

Michael, you have de-monster-ated great talent and show potential as an FRLian. Mitchell's song is beautiful, but it is non-compliant, as you've pointed out yourself. "cookies" should indeed be "fruitcakes". We expect Mitchell to be induct-taped to the FRL when he is of appropriate age, at which time he should then graduate to Whiskey-Soaked Fruitcakes, my favorite kind.

Deb! Perfectly compliant poem. Makes me want a cat.

SOB Sir, since Tricia is allowed to de-duct 2 birthdays, I think it is only fair that the rest of us ladies with special circumstances be allowed to de-duct birthdays also. My birthday comes the first working week of January and is not Y2K compliant, does that qualify me?

I forth the emotion to keep on partying for a full week (wouldn't be right to leave our leader so incapacitated all by himself.)

-- Chris (#$%^&@pond.com), November 04, 1999.

(sigh) This is beautiful!

Great post rob! MVI (sigh), I have two beautiful daughters, I feel for your loss and admire your wonderfull celebration of his spirit

I am shy thats why I've never shared the thoughts of my heart always too scared never thought anyone cared.

Whhooohhh My palms are sweaty. That was really hard. I have been writing poetry for years -- and have never shared, silly but truly always to scared. What an absolutely pleasant surprise ;-)

-- MIS (KarlaCALIF@aol.com), November 05, 1999.

AAAAWW MAAAAAAN!!! The LAST time we did a party, it took up TWO WHOLE THREADS and I was cyber-hung-(out-to-dry-)over for a week and a half. Youse guys wanna skelebrates fer a whole WEEK????? Wha amn ah gonna DOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo...... [THUD]

[sound of head hitting keyboard, immediately followed by [THUMP...skuddu skuddu THWOK padda padda padda] The sound of body arriving at floor level via the keyboard hangup, followed by the keyboard and 3 cats]

Tricia soon will have her birthday,

Sunny thoughts to take on her way,

For a week we all will party,

But break the thread and well be sorry,

So lets be careful as we play.

Dont give me too much to drink,

To new levels I may sink,

S.O.B. knows how to count,

Hes shown Tricia the new fount,

Welcome MIS (Karla)!!! Thanks for joining our crazy group. All thoughts are welcome here, and poetry is a joy! Yours was great! Please feel free to share anytime. :-)

I fear that I will be on the road for the big party week, so allow me to lay this little gift right here for now.

PASSAGE

To understand time

Would be the knowing

Of lives tangled in glances,

Of wakening and death

And shared breath.

I wish I were a better man

Then perhaps

I could show her,

the passage of years

is breezes

and twinklings

and fears

Can we deduct tape decades now?

Or just birthdays?

But since He was actually born in 2 or 3 BC, that adds two or three years to what we weren't already not allowed to celebrate yet until the 12th, which is after the 11th, so does that re-add the missing three days or subtract the residual from the 13th?

Witch isn't here yet either.

Tricia...

Happy upcoming birthday! (The time to celebrate is always... NOW!!!)

Diane

(Thanks for the coffee Rob! Gulping some now and gotta run in a few! Sounds like you and Chuck could use some too!)

(Also, Tricia, its a bad sign when your Mother asks you how old you are!... as mine just did. *Sigh* Youre young yet... not even near the halfway mark... like Donna n I... the Year of the Dragon ladies).

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), November 05, 1999.

In honor of your birthday, I wanted just to relay, That youre so special friend, And just around the bend, Is coming your fifth decade.

We count a different way, It matters not I say, Tricia still you are, And though you live afar, You're always here to play.

You are a Princess true, Your daughters hair is blue, I think we do agree, Its fun to be so free, Best wishes are for you.

((((FRLians))))

I'm so touched. I've got to keep this short, 'cause I'm accessing from the public library - my monitor finally stayed quit all day (AARRGGHH) - can you say 'withdrawl'?

I (oh so reluctantly ;-/ ) accept being 39 until 2010. After all, one can not argue with the Count, can one? And hope to join the party when and as I can - feel free to start without me, I'll catch up ;-)

((((FRLians))))

-- T the C (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), November 05, 1999.

Oh, dear, I guess I blew it. I'm having my 39th b'day next week, so that must make me 38 this week :-)

Deb, welcome seconded! Write more, it's great.

Thanks to secret admirer for the wine. I think there's a few drops left after Rob's done. He doesn't usually take much - takes effect too fast. Here's to you, thoughtful one!

How nice to see Robert poke his head up again. Are you drowning in work, Robert? We see you here so rarely these days.

Poor, poor Chuck. Have the felines forgiven you yet? Your problem is, you don't drink often enough. It's all that driving, I guess. Very uncool to drink at 8am, when *you* get off work. Kinda cuts the opportunities, hmm.

Lawn, I'm so honoured. Poetry for me?? And up to your usual fantastic standards, too. Have a good week, even if it must be away.

Night train, welcome to the FRL. You can certainly bring cheese, but let Chuck have his whine. He's entitled, he does such a great job out there in the BB. Gotta let down hair somewhere, ya know.

Diane, thanks for the good wishes. My mom'll probably ask me my age next week, then look at me really strange when I say it's my 39th. She keeps track, just likes to have it confirmed.

Don't know why my monitor absolutely refused to work yesterday. It was fine at 2am, when I couldn't sleep and seems fine today. However, this connection thing is getting worse, overall. DH says that's good, it's easier to find problem that's definitely broke. So having it back today is a mixed blessing.

Happy Birthday, Tricia of the Geese Militia

(no sightings to report :-()

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), November 06, 1999.

"I'm having my 39th b'day next week, so that must make me 38 this week".

Hmmmm, Tricia. Velly Intelesting. Looks like you have a birthday each week then. So by rollover, which is 8 weeks from now. you will be - let's see - uh, 38 + 8 - yeah that's it!

Ashton & Leska: Good to hear from youz guyz. And thanks for the stealth report.

-- (sonofdust@birthday.count), November 06, 1999.

Ah, youth! I remember 39!! Glad you got a working monitor again....have you checked where it plugs into power in the back? Mine sometimes looks plugged in but is loose....I'm sure you did this...but my mind, forcibly-simplified by teenagers, can only do simple tonight.

Got my birthday party sheets on....trudging down from the hilltop for Tricia's B-day week....

-- Donna (moment@pacbell.net), November 06, 1999.

--,

>Looks like you have a birthday each week then. So by rollover, which is 8 weeks from now. you will be - let's see - uh, 38 + 8 - yeah that's it!<

Nunh Unh --, next week she will celebrating the 18th anniversary of her 21st birthday. But, since I had to take 2 of them away from her, she will really be much younger than she is now. This is as it should be of course. To a point.

That's how it's done around here anyway. Her Exquisite Loveliness will remain forever 25. She just celebrated the 32nd anniversary of said event. I think of her as still being 18, just as she was when she made a serious error in judgement and married me. Foolish girl.

I, however, am 3 days older than dirt, and I feel it too.

Ms. Chris,

Nurse Lady, in the spirit of equality and friendship, and to cut down on any "neener neener" stuff from all of the ladies who get might jealous of Ms. Tricia:

I propose that ALL of you lovely ladies who may read these lines may remove any 2 birthdays that you wish to. They don't even have to be consecutive years. Plus, as an extra no cost option, since next year is the BIG 00, you can even start the new century by re-setting the way back machine to any starting point that you wish. This is, of course, a one time option though, so be sure that you make a good choice.

Fair enough?

SOBob, you are sweet. Also funny - my sister, my husband and I all enjoyed a good belly laugh from your post. Do take Diane up on her offer, young dirt is surely better than dust ;-)

Karla, that was very kind - and nice poetry, too. Welcome back.

Rob, the Count has definitely given me a reprieve on the aging at a year/week trick. In the future, you will kindly Not try to age me so quickly; time is doing it quite nicely without your help! Are you going to start a party thread? Would you like me to? Always happy to help out (short of leadership, natch)

-- Tricia the Canuck (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), November 07, 1999.

S.O.Bob: Once again, O Great Official FRLian Keeper of the Count, you have demonstarted why you hold the important position you do. Great job Sir.

Tricia: I didn't intend to start a new FRLian thread until the Big One Year FRLian Anniworsesary (12/11), when duty and protocol dictate that I deliver the formal State of the FRL Address. As always, feel free to use your own good judgement to start one if/when the need arises before hand, or after hand, or before feet, or after feet, or defeet, or.....

Off to get more duct tape. BFN, Rob

-- (sonofdust@more.ducttape), November 07, 1999.

What a great idea! We're gonna window winnow our ages back at Rollover. -20 sounds just right. Now there's something to look forward to on New Year's Evil. Another regression ;^)

Say Chief, speaking of deduction tape: we got these 2 mountain bikes, black for stealth operations, outfitted with lotsa black accessories (gonna get upper body strength workout too cuz they're so heavy now), and the brand names etc were shining out with florescent white/cream, so Ashton bought BLACK duct tape at Home Depot and oh-so-camaflogged these bicycles so they're black as night all over! Whistled a FRLian tune as we worked, did we.

Saw black 'n blue 'n chartreause 'n red 'n white duct tape flavors at Home Depot, thought of the lobbing missions that could be hidden in plain sight, had to file a report ...

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), November 07, 1999.

Ashton & Leska,

Do share the bike brand name with the troops... if the cash flow allows... I may purchase a California stealth mountain bike... soon.

(Gotta follow those geese trails).

Details please! (Know you two did a heck of a lot of research BB-- before buying).

Thanks,

Diane

BTW...

(((HAPPY SUNDAY ALL!!!)))

It's about to rain in Silicon Valley today.

This may not be a big deal to most of you... BUT... last weekend, in driving down to Carmel, passed our large resevoir of back-up water supply above my town. It's almost as low--down to the mud level--as I've ever seen it. (KOS would love it). We're talkin' a "BIG" lake here.

THIS IS NOT GOOD!!!

Water rationing after the rollover--assuming the PG&E power stays on, etc.-- if we don't start getting more wet stuff!

Bummer.

Diane

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), November 07, 1999.

A&L: Thanks for the Duct Tape report :) You both are hereby officially deducted into the Duct tape Understanding and Help (DUH) Support Group. Duct Tape - Don't bug out without it.

-- (sonofdust@DUH.DUH), November 07, 1999.

Chief, thank you for the disashonor! Our resume has been spruce goosed lately and the addition of DUH Support Group rememberslip is sure to be a stickler addition!

Diane, we'll write up a new thread about Bicycle Shopping. Wouldn't want to bore the Bored with the long details here ;^) It's a whole lot more involved than when we got our 1st bikes at age 7, but it still feels just as exciting :-)

Gotta work on two major eMails, then plan to upgrade IE & OE to 4.5 today *trembling* plus gotta get outside and ride before it rains. Congrats on your wet event today! Take a pic of the lake first and send to KoS ;^)

Ashton had paper routes throughout boyhood so is really balanced on zee bike. Leska, um, well, let's just say had the sense to start out nice 'n safe in the park, and wiped out on first try LOL. Steep hills in the park. Injuries not too bad, and some interesting grass stain streaks embedded various places.

The bikes are great! Fast, rugged, all-terrain, indestructable, extremely comfortable, blast to ride! workhorse wheels. Currently totally re-doing very cramped apartment to accomodate them (bigger than they look). Tried floors, aisles, hanging from ceilings, walls, etc.

Got air space?

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), November 07, 1999.

I hate to add another picture because it makes the thread longer to load, but how can I really say Happy Birthday without one? Words just aren't the same sometimes! :-) Happy Birthday Ms. Tricia! Thanks for giving us a reason to party!! I sure do miss Hardliner... Do you think if we started a new party thread he might show up?

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 07, 1999.

Thanks, Gayla. As for Hardliner showing up - I think it took puns last time, no wait - that was Grey Bear. We could give the party thread a try, I'll let you have the honour. He'd be practically a sure thing if we made it a poetry party ;-) I notice that you, like me, are reserving the right to choose your age 'til closer to the OhOh date. Decisions, decisions...

Happy Birthday Tricia!!!

(((S.O.B.))) And a BBIIIIIIIIGGGGG smooch to you too! I think I love you all ready. ;-)

Another usage for duct tape (from my hiking days): Take a small piece of dry wood and wind duct tape around it a few times. Keep it in your bugout bag - the duct tape can be used for repairs, making shelter, covering blisters (prevents friction), etc... and the piece of wood can be splintered for kindling or used whole as a hammer, pot- holder, etc.

No geese sighted yet, evne though I've three quarries behind the house. Not a honk to be heard here in Central Ohio. I can't wait for next spring though - I love to see the goslings in the "eraser- head" stage of the molt, they're SOOOO cute! :-)

Attention FRLians. The FRL will now come to order for Official FRLian business.

It has come to my retention that despite our resounding victory against the evil KYF proposal, it still is not dead. This is as we expected. We won a battle and not the war. Here is the latest proof that we must remain wigilant. Consider the following, pulled from another thread - which I slightly modified :)

The Fruitcake Reserve's "Fruitcake Secrecy Act Compliance Manual" effectively requires fruitcake suppliers to implement Know Your Fruitcake programs even without the FDIC rule. In fact, over 88% of fruitcake suppliers reported in a recent survey by the American Fruitcake Association that they already have Know Your Fruitcake policies in place. According to a high mucky muck of the Bored, Know Your Fruitcake is not dead, but needs to be "repackaged".

Resist FRLians resist! Remember what is at steak, even if you are a vegetarian. We must protect our Fruitcake Freedoms. Do your FRLian duty. Write your local reprehensible to let them know that this insidious, iniquitous, unconstitutional and vile usurpation of our freedoms will not be tolerated! The enema is moving! We need to also!

Long Live Our Fruitcake Freedoms. Long Live the FRL!

(You may go back to being out of order.)

From my brother-in-out-law; aka Veronica's childrens' future aunt's husband....

---

Dilbert's Salary Theorum for Engineers and Programmers:

Engineers and Programmers can never earn as much as business executives and sales people."

This can be established by the following facts:

1. Knowledge is Power.

2. Time is Money.

From the fundamental physical laws of the universe (Newton, Einstein, et al)

Power = Work/Time.

From the economic laws of productivity (Edison, Ford, Carnegie, et al)

Time = Money.

Therefore,

Knowledge = Work/ Money

Solving for Money, we get:

Money = Work/Knowledge

Obviously, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity, regardless of how much work is actually done.

Given that management (and sales) know nothing and have absolute power; compared, for example, to engineers, who know everything but have absolutely no power, it is obvious to the most casual observer that management will always be paid more than engineers.

Tricia! You're a Scorpio too! I KNEW there was something I liked about you. Yeah, it's my birthday soon too but never mind when. Actually, I don't do birthdays, haven't for ages. How many other FRLians are under this sign? C'mon, 'fess up.

We had been married for seven years (known each other nine) when Sweetie remembered my birthday. He came home, gave me some great new books and said, "Happy Birthday!" Naturally, me being me, I put my hands on my hips and demanded, "Okay--what's her name?"

So, Tricia, did you know Charlie Manson is a Scorpio too?

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), November 08, 1999.

OG, really, talk about giving with one hand and taking away with the other! Welcome to the Birthweek party. We can share it, since it looks like no one else is gonna own up after your Manson comment, lol.

Y'all may be pleased to hear that DH is getting a handle on the monitor situation. It seems that the casing is the problem. He has it off, right now, and although I may be electrocuted, I can see fine!

I guess the BB is having an overload today. Good, it can match mine! (oops, not very generous, is it).

Okay, I rescind - I hope that everyone who wants can make it on, no problem!

I'm way too brain dead to compose, but I'm not above quoting my spiritual grandfather, Robert Frost. This one, perfect for the Fall of the year:

A Leaf-Treader

I have been treading on leaves all day until I am autumn-tired.
God knows all the color and form of leaves I have trodden on and mired.
Perhaps I have put forth too much strength and been too fierce from fear.
I have safely trodden underfoot the leaves of another year.

All summer long they were overhead, more lifted up than I.
To come to their final place in earth they had to pass me by.
All summer long I thought I heard them threatening under their breath.
And when they came it seemed with a will to carry me with them to death.

They spoke to the fugitive in my heart as if it were leaf to leaf.
They tapped at my eyelids and touched my lips with an invitation to grief.
But it was no reason I had to go because they had to go.
Now up, my knee to keep on top of another year of snow.

Tidings of joy are wished for you,

All good things and better too,

Rise again after restful sleep,

And when you hear your monitor beep,

Come back Home to see whats new.

Thank-you for the poem, Rob! And OG, I was sure that you could come up with someone better than Manson as a Scorpio example if you tried ;-)

I have to share a funny ad my daughter saw on a billboard today. A man is pictured saying, "Actually, that is a phone in my pocket" with a line underneath stating "Vibrating option - (brand name) phones". Or maybe I just have a skewed sense of humour :-)

Here's to fun, wherever we find it. Cheers

My Moms birthday is today.

In her honor, cause she likes dogs...

THINGS WE CAN LEARN FROM A DOG

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

When loved ones come home, always greet them.

When its in your best interest, practice obedience.

Let others know when theyve invaded your territory.

Run, romp and play daily.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when youve had enough.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be someone youre not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

When youre happy, dance around and wag your whole body.

No matter how often youre scolded, dont buy into the guilt thing and pout.. run right back and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

I love all the poetry here! I'm going to add a really silly one. I received this in an e-mail yesterday and ROTFL! I thought Lon could appreciate the "Bubba" stuff, and Rob would enjoy the Duct tape reference. :-) REDNECK LUV POME

Collards is green,
my dog's name is Blue
and I'm so lucky
to have a sweet thang like you.

Yore hair is like cornsilk
a-flappin in the breeze.
Softer than Blue's
and without all them fleas.

You move like the bass,
which excite me in May.
you ain't got no scales
but I luv you anyway.

Yo're as satisfy'n as okry
jist a-fry'n in the pan.
Yo're as fragrant as "snuff"
right out of the can.

You have some'a yore teeth,
for which I am proud;
I hold my head high
when we're in a crowd.

On special occasions,
when you shave under yore arms,
well, I'm in hawg heaven,
and awed by yore charms.

Still them fellers at work,
They all want to know,
what I did to deserve
such a purty, young doe.

Like a good roll of duct tape
yo're there fer yore man,
to patch up life's troubles
and fix what you can.

Yo're as cute as a junebug
a-buzzin' overhead.
You ain't mean like them far ants
I found in my bed.

Cut from the best cloth
like a plaid flannel shirt,
you spark up my life
more than a fresh load o' dirt.

When you hold me real tight
like a padded gunrack,
my life is complete;
Ain't nuthin' I lack.

Yore complexion, it's perfection,
like the best vinyl sidin'.
despite all the years,
yore age, it keeps hidin'.

Me 'n' you's like a Moon Pie
with a RC cold drank,
we go together
like a skunk goes with stank.

Some men, they buy chocolate
for Valentine's Day;
They git it at Wal-Mart,
it's romantic that way.

Some men git roses
on that special day
from the cooler at Kroger.
"That's impressive," I say.

Some men buy fine diamonds
from a flea market booth.
"Diamonds are ferever,"
they explain, suave and couth.

But for this man, honey,
these just won't do.
Cause yo're too special,
you sweet thang you.

I got you a gift,
without taste ner odor,
more useful than diamonds...
IT'S A NEW TROLL'N MOTOR!!

Luv, from yore romeo!

Gayla, Thankyou! I needed that laugh (I *always* need laughs)

This is sure some quiet party, folks. I guess it must be 'cause Lawn is missing from his corner, and Rob gave up on being host. Maybe it's just as well, since tomorrow is a day for quiet reflection. See y'all here Friday - though it may be brief. I'm working and expecting my bro-in-law and family

.

We will remember

Those who died for our freedom

And those who still fight

,

-- Tricia the Canuck (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), November 10, 1999.

When at the end of the day we pray,

To thank and ask and wish and say,

What it is thats on our mind,

Contemplating something kind,

For someone - tomorrow and today.

A smile costs nothing and makes us glad,

specially for someone who may be sad,

give one out and you will see,

a pleasure it is sure to be,

to someone that is feeling bad.

So now before I go to sleep,

And rest my weary mind and feet,

A message of kindness, hope and faith,

In promises that we will not break,

For ourselves and others they we keep.

Hi Tricia! It is a quiet party isn't it. I haven't given up being host, though I am not around as much as I would like, and some FRLians are not around at all :( All in due time I guess.

Besides, I think that any party would seem tame compared to what we did last time - actually crashed some folks 'puters! So at least we can still get in here!

-- (sonofdust@still.host), November 10, 1999.

Hi, Rob - Yup quiet lately 'round here. But there's also been some difficulty getting onto BB the last couple of days. We'll blame that ;-)

.

Popping in briefly

Today we clean up for guests

Arriving Saturday

,

Sheesh, even my cleaning is haiku-infected. Donna, what have you done to me??

-- Tricia the Canuck (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), November 11, 1999.

Tricias Birthday is almost here,

Is she wondering what to wear?

It doesnt matter on this forum,

We observe proper decorum,

Red socks, blue hair, whos to care!

p.s. Since you are having guests Tricia, and have to clean up, you may want to clean down and sideways also. Anyone have white gloves? LOL.

-- (sonofdust@cleaning.up), November 11, 1999.

Rob, does that mean that I'm sufficiently well dressed if I borrow Carla's bright red socks and her hair dye? Nah, it's just not me :-)

I'll be in briefly tomorrow - I found someone to take my shift tomorrow night, so I'm just doing tonight and celebrating tomorrow, I don't have to sleep all day in order to be awake again all night. Bliss!

For you Tricia; Honorable Princess, Field Marshall and Commander of the Canuckian Stealth Geese Regiment, Dear and Loyal FRLian, and Writer of Creditable Limericks and Haikus - Happy Birthday! The Big Day is here and so I am. Glad to see that you will be able to enjoy it.

I'll try to pop in later tonight again. Wanna dance?

Help!

I've tracked down the pre-beginnings of the Canadianainainan steath geeses thread -

http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000DfT

Diane, it needs your youthful magic and attention to get re-categorized (or only pastuerized, if that's not too high up to see) to the correct category (now under military) to the new "poetry and puns" category....

Anyway - that thread started the reference to the imbending Canadianianian invasion - which led/lead/leaded to the introduction of the steath geese - since we down here in the "getting invaded part of the country" couldn't find any evidence of the invasion other than crazy Canadianian license plates....It also introduced Omar (or Clyde), and his funny looking buddy.

... So, who remembers what the next thread in this continuing saga was/is/will be?

OK, now I'm jealous!!! LOL! Rob, you were MY dancing partner at the LAST party!!! :-) And I can't even get S.O.B. to waltz with me! Not to mention that Lon has been gone ALL week... :-(

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRICIA! We love ya, bunches! :-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 12, 1999.

need music. anyone can do?

-- (tunes@for.dancing), November 12, 1999.

The [Contribute an Answer] button is wandering again....probably looking for Lon and SoB for that dance with Gayla...hope it's arms are long enough to get around the matter

- then again, dancing is always more interesting with shorter arms - and a warmer heart .... Since you can spin a waltz or polka faster with a smaller moment of inertia whose combined center of mass is closest to the vertical axis of motion, you can apply the simple laws of physics to assume that Gayla (whose reputed center of mass is said to forwardly mobile in the frontward direction) would be a more ideal dance partner, than say, Clyde. (or Omar)

Tricia,

Happy Birthday, and thank you for all of your wonderful poetry and posts. Wasn't it you that said this would be a year of living schizophrenically? If so, you were right on! Hope you have a great time on your special day. Don't stay up too late dancing.

-- (secret@dmirer.ofTricia), November 12, 1999.

ROTFL!! Watch it, Robert!!!! I'm gonna have to reach through this computer and smack you!!!! :-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 12, 1999.

Cheers Tricia!!!!

Put the red socks away, and get out your glass slippers!! I promise your carriage won't turn into a pumkin @ Midnight. Dance the entire night away, and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

poetry music
and friends in all maelstrom times
they make sense to me

-- Donna (moment@pacbell.net), November 12, 1999.

Thank-you all! What a lovely birthday present, to get all these best wishes. I return them multiplied to you, my fellow sane keeping inmates.

.

Birthdays come and go

But throughout all time and space

Friends stay in the heart

.

I 'specially want to know the identity of my secret @dmirer - will that be your Christmas present to me? Thanks for the poem, (((Deb))). I'll likely be out partying (at Karla's command :-) tonight, so if I miss it, save that dance for me for another time, Rob. If I can, I'll drop in at about 8 EST before I go , but it seems unlikely - gotta do what I can with the magic wand(s) to beautify the face prior to venturing into public view. Enjoy the party here, folks.

-- Tricia the Canuck (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), November 12, 1999.

Hello all. Where is Lon? Or as Mom calls him, Lawn? Mom says if Dad and she go out tonight, my sister and I get pizza. Yay! Seeing as how I have a little bit left in my blue hair container, I'm going to see if I can get my hair to be cooperative today and turn a nice green-blue color. Mom plans to take our pictures pretty soon, so then you can see her 3-inch brown hair and my 9-inch greeny-brown chocolate-chip-mint-colored hair. Later, all ye extremely funny FRLians.

-- Carla the Canuck (got@no.address), November 12, 1999.

Nobody can get their birthday present (or their Christmas present) unless they email me.....hint, hint.

--

On Karla, the hair has hue.

Yay - Karla, the heir, gets pizza to chew.

Poor Karla, the bottle, is near empty

But Karla, the mix, might be plenty...

Oh Karla, the hair, did the wind blew??

-- Robert A. Cook, PE (Marietta, GA) (cook.r@csaatl.com), November 12, 1999.

Gayla, Gayla, Gayla. You were a pleasure to dance with and surely you must know that I look forward to us dancing again sometime, so don't be jealous :)

Tricia: Ok. We'll save that dance for another time. As luck would have it, Dear Mrs. Michaels and I have the house to ourselves tonight (a rare event) and so we will be having our own little party. LOL.

BFN, Rob

-- (sonofdust@partying.now), November 12, 1999.

Well, I can still type (sorta), so I guess we didn't party tooo hearty - just hearty enough ;-)

Rob, I'll look forward to that dance.

Robert, Karla (Karlacalif) is not Carla (Carla the Canuck), though I understand your con-fusion (dh asks if that kind of fusion is common in the power industry?). Carla is the one with blue/green hair, and who has my old red socks. Karla is the one who said to toss aside the red socks to don my dancing shoes - don't know why I couldn't wear both though; that certainly ought to make for a memorable evening.

.

My muse is resting

And so will I

-- T the C (tricia_canuck@hotmail.com), November 13, 1999.

Happy DAZE Tricia! (Or is that night?)

Best wishes... again... and again... and again.

(((((Rob))))) Gayla, Gayla, Gayla, is exactly the way one of my dearest friends says my name when she hears my voice. We don't get to talk often, and I miss her. I think I'll call her today. I hope you and Mrs. Michaels enjoyed your party! :-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), November 13, 1999.

Hi MVI. Good to hear from you again :)

Well gang, this here thread is getting a bit long so I think I'll start the next.
