Is there something wrong with my EOS elan 2 AF assist beam?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I am the happy owner of an EOS Elan 2 body, and several (blasphemy!!) Tamron and Quantarray lenses.

I have noticed that in poor lighting conditions, the camera is having trouble focusing. First I thought it might be connected to my lenses - but the autofocus works like a charm in 'green-zone'.

After testing a little, It seems that it won't use the AF assist beam in any of the other modes - independently of what I set CF 7 to.

Can nayone shed some light on this? Is this just a fact of life I have to live with?

I don't have a real answer for you, but I just tested mine and the AF assist lit up in every mode on the dial except for DEP and sports modes. How are you confirming your suspicion? I kept the lens cap on and stood about three feet from a blank wall so I could see the beam. Give it a try if you did something else.

Hmm.. I tested in lo-light enviroments, but I look at the emitter on the body - and it lights up in 'green-zone' but not in P, aperture, shutter speed or manual modes.

This would be normal for camera with CF7 set to 1 (turns off the AF assist light). The green mode disables all custom functions so it would still work then. So I guess the question is, are you sure you have CF7 set to 0?

OK, more info:

a) Yes, I have tested with CF7 on and off. it makes very little difference.

b) I have also tried it in all three AF modes - no difference

I have moved the AF button to the AE Lock button on the back of the cam - and since I didn't have my manual close by, I haven't tested after moving that function back to the shutter-button.

That might have something to do with it.

Thanks for your input folks!
