Bison

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

This is my first submission and I am new to wildlife photography. This was shot in Yellowstone last month hand held with a 300 IS lens on Provia F. Any constructive criticism will be appreciated.

Steve, for a newbie you have done an excellent job. Shoot something dark is never easy and you have done a good job on the exposure part.

Welcome to the world of wildlife photography!

Hi Steve:

Great job! You really got close. Even with a 300 mm lens you had to have been within his comfort zone. Maybe a 1/3 stop more would have lightened his face and chest a bit but otherwise a great shot! I wish it were my shot.

To be honest I think that the reason I was able to get so "close" was that this was probably shot out of my car. There were a group of bison wandering next to the road. I would never have gotten this close on foot.

I like this photo. The only thing that bothers me is the top of his back that is clipped. My eyes keep wandering to that point and want to finish the curve. I don't usally mind on close-ups parts of the body being clipped, but when the lines come so close to touching, they fight for my attention. This is a good bison shot!
